Sri Lanka started as the favourites, having experienced players over a young and new Australian team. However, they were unable to restrict the hosts in the first innings as the Australians put up a target of 306 for the visitors.
Tillakaratne Dilshan smashed 51 runs before getting run out by Usman Khawaja. Dinesh Chandimal scored 73 for the visitors, providing some hope to the Lankans. However, he was dismissed by Clint McKay, as Brad Haddin took a superb catch behind the stumps.
Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals and the lack of big partnerships cost the visitors.
McKay was top wicket-taker for the Australia, as he picked up four wickets, dismissing Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene and Chandimal.
Australia produced three run outs to keep Sri Lanka on the ropes.
