Bangladesh chased down a record 319 to win their important Pool A match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 against Scotland at Nelson. It was their highest run chase in World Cup. Sandipan Banerjee looks back at the major highlights of this historic game.
1. Kyle Coetzer’s epic knock:Kyle Coetzer, the Scotland opener and former skipper wrote his name in the history book when he scored the highest score as an Associates batsman in World Cup. His 156 off 134 balls was the main reason behind Scotland enthusiastic display with bat on Thursday at Nelson. He took little bit time initially, but after getting accustomed to the wicket, the right-hander attacked the Bangladeshi bowlers. His hundred came in just 103 balls and in next 26 balls, Coetzer scored another fifty runs. Full Scorecard: Bangladesh vs Scotland
2. Taskin Ahmed’s brilliant bowling performance: When most of the experienced Bangladeshi bowlers were going for runs, the youngster Taskin Ahmed bowled brilliantly. In his first three overs Taskin gave only six runs and picked up the wicket of Hamish Gardiner. He again came back and bowled full and straight in the death overs. On Thursday, Bangladesh were not chasing more than 340, only because of this 20-year-old pacer from Dhaka. His final figure was seven overs, 43 runs and three wickets. Scotland shattered after loss to Bangladesh in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015
3. Soumya Sarkar’s record:Soumya Sarkar, the Bangladesh all-rounder though had a poor day with bat, but on field, he had a good day. Soumya took four catches. First he caught Gardiner at cover off Taskin, then Preston Mommsen and Kyle Coetzer — both at deep mid-wicket off Nasir Hossain, and an outstanding catch at deep square-leg to dismiss Majid Haq off Shakib Al Hasan. Sarkar emulated the record held by Mohammad Kaif — that of most catches in a World Cup cricket innings by a non-wicketkeeper.
4: Bangladesh’s fight back through Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim: At the half-way stage of the match, when Scotland had already put a big total in the scoreboard, they became the favourites. Also Anamul Haque’s unavailability for batting due to a shoulder injury, made Bangladesh’s job tougher. But some counter attacking batting by Tamim Iqbal (95), Mahmudullah (62), Shakib Al Hasan, (52 not out), Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman helped the Asian team to ease past the target with 11 balls to spare.
5: Highest successful run-chase by Bangladesh: Thiswas Bangladesh’s highest ever run-chase in this format and in Word Cup. And with this victory Bangladesh kept their hope alive for the quarter-final. Bangladesh now take on a struggling England team and a win will put them in the quarter-final, most likely against India. They also have a match against New Zealand. Bangladesh register commendable 6-wicket win over Scotland
