Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have been like the kid who has all the toys but for some reason does not know how to play with them. They have the squad, a good able coach but they lack the intensity to hit as a team. Nikhil Popat digs deeper to look at their performance in IPL.

In the first two editions of IPL, DD were the team to watch out for. They were semi-finalists in both tournaments, before tapering off. Gautam Gambhir was the top scorer for them in the inaugural season. In 2009, they had the likes of Virender Sehwag, David Warner, AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan led by Gambhir. They were knocked out by an Adam Gilchrist special in the semi-final and they have made it to the playoffs only once since that game. IPL 2015 Auction: Delhi Daredevils full list of players bought

They did not have that much success after that. Injuries and lack of good performances saw them chop and change their squad. In 2012, they were the table toppers, but could not get past Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and then Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the knockouts. Of all the players released by DD, the one that may come back to haunt them might be that of Sehwag. He was the lone star for them all these years and after the exit from DD in 2013, he had an impressive debut season for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) last year.  IPL 2015 Auction: Kings XI Punjab full list of players bought

DD have appointed JP Duminy as their skipper this season. They have also made some big purchases, getting in Yuvraj Singh, Angelo Mathews, Zaheer Khan. With the likes of Mohammed Shami, Imran Tahir already in the squad, they have good bowling resources. Duminy will also bank on youngsters like Mayank Agarwal and Kedar Jadhav to step up and perform. A lot will also be expected of Manoj Tiwary (if fit) to raise his game and put up an impressive show. They have a better squad now and will hope for better results for their hard work.
