While Chennai Super Kings (CSK) sit pretty at the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 Points Table, their bowling unit has certain flaws that need to be addressed going into the latter stages of the tournament. R Vishal writes Chennai should stop with the unnecessary tinkering to their starting line-up.
The last two encounters for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 have been smash-and-grab victories. But the settled unit that was brimming has been dismantled a little bit. While Dwayne Smith’s imperious form escalates him to greater heights, Mohit Sharma is replicating the West Indian’s acts in the bowling department. A few games earlier, it was the reliable medium-pacers of Ben Hilfenhaus that got the two-time IPL winners the early blows that allowed Mohit to make further inroads.
Out of the blue, coach Stephen Fleming and captain MS Dhoni have decided to pack their side with a third spinner in West Indian leggie Samuel Badree. So far, Badree’s beginnings have been rather modest and the Indian contingent at Chennai have comfortably overshadowed his performances.
Spin bowling has not been an issue that needed any further additions. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin hurling deliveries with a bevy of variations, while leaving little time for the batsmen to think has been a proven menace for opponents. With the tournament entering the business end, Dhoni’s men will be further tested if they have the ingredients to bring home an unprecedented third crown.
Despite being unheralded and uneasy on the eye, Hilfenhaus is a reliable customer and has been an asset so far. Ishwar Pandey has had a great start to his IPL career but needs an experienced head to seize the early initiative. The CSK team management is trying to keep the side fresh but zeroing in on your best side is not something other teams can boast of and is not something that should be chopped and changed regularly.
