Jhulan-Goswami

Born November 25, 1982, Jhulan Goswami is an Indian women cricketer, who is an integral part of the team. She has an excellent ability to get extra bounce.. She is a decent hand with the bat too. Jhulan was once the captain of the side but now she is succeeded by Mithali Raj. On her birthday, Abhishek Kumar writes 10 little-known facts about her.

1.  Inspired from 1997 world cup final: The final match of the 1997 Women’s World Cup was being played at Jhulan’s home ground, which is the famous Eden Gardens of Kolkata. Australia and New Zealand were playing the final match and she was asked to volunteer as the ball-girl in that game. After watching such legendary figures of women’s cricket  like Belinda Clark, Debbie Hockey and Cathryn Fitzpatrick, she decided to make her career in cricket.

2.  Received award from MS Dhoni: Jhulan was the winner of ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award in 2007. She had a very good bowling average of below 22 in both Tests and One-Day Internationals (ODI) and consistently bowled at a low economy rate. She received this award from MS Dhoni. In an interview, Jhulan describes that moment as “icing on the cake” with a big smile on her face.

3.  Guided India to first Test series win in England: During Indian Women’s tour of England in 2006, Jhulan was the key player behind India’s first Test series win in England by women’s team. She took five wickets in both the innings and outplayed the English women’s team. Her figures in both the innings were, 13-4-33-5 and 36.2-21-45-5. It is the only 10 wicket maiden for Jhulan.

4.  Fastest woman bowler: After Cathryn Fitzpatrick, Jhulan became the world’s fastest woman bowler. At a good height of 5’11”, Jhulan can bowl regularly at 120 kph.

5.  Love for England: Out of her 177 ODI wickets, Jhulan has taken most wickets against England. In her 44 ODIs against England, she has taken 63 wickets at 18.64 and also her best figures in limited over format are also against the same team with five for 16.

6.  Early struggle: Jhulan started playing cricket at the age of 15. She used to wake up at 4:30 in the morning to catch the local train and reach the practice session. She lives 80 km away from Kolkata, where the practise session took place. Many times she missed the train and couldn’t make it to the practise but she never gave up. Like other Indian parents, Jhulan’s parents’ too wanted her to concentrate more on studies than cricket.

7.  Dream: Jhulan’s only dream is to win the 2017 World Cup and she is working hard for it.

9.  Nickname: Her Indian teammates used to call her as ‘Gozzy’, because of her broad smile.

10.  Her Favourites’:  In an interview in Cricfit.com, Jhulan revealed her many favourite things. Starting with cuisine, Jhulan prefers Chinese but when it comes to movies, she loves 3 Idiots and actor Aamir Khan is her favourite. Whereas, Kajol is her favourite actress and favourite sportsperson is Diego Maradona. Coming on to her favourite destination, it’s London, while she likes to read books as well.

10.  Best compliment: One of her close relatives once told, ‘’Jhulan, you are a good cricketer, but you are an even better person’’, which she considers as the best compliment for her.
