The fourth Test of the five-match series between India and England is being played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. After winning the toss, England decided to bat first, and included a new player in their side in Keaton Jennings. India also went in with changes. They brought in Bhuvneshwar Kumar for Mohammed Shami and KL Rahul for Ajinkya Rahane. Both Shami and Rahane are out with injuries. Jennings replaced Haseeb Hameed. He opened batting with captain Alastair Cook and played an excellent knock of 112 runs. Beside him, Cook fell to Ravindra Jadeja 4 runs short of his another fifty. Further, Moeen Ali scored a fifty but could not convert it into a big one. At the end of first day’s play of this Test, England have lost 5 wickets with 288 runs on board. Four out of five wickets were taken by Ravichandran Ashwin. As expected, the first day of this Test ended with some interesting numbers and we present them.

This is the 1st Test for India at any ground of Mumbai (Bombay Gymkhana, Brabourne Stadium and Wankhede Stadium) without any Mumbai player in the playing XI. Had skipper Virat Kohli included Shardul Thakur in the playing XI, this interesting statistic would have not emerged. Also, when India played its first home Test in 1933-34 at Bombay Gymkhana Ground, there was no Ranji Trophy tournament but three players from that team — Vijay Merchant, Rustomji Jamshedji and LP Jai later represented Mumbai when Ranji Trophy tournament began in 1934-35.

Keaton Jennings became 8th visiting batsman to score a hundred on his debut Test in India after Bryan Valentine (1933-34), Bruce Taylor (1964-65), Gordon Greenidge (1974-75), Michael Clarke (2004-05), Cook (2005-06), Alviro Petersen (2009-10) and Kane Williamson (2010-11).

Jennings is also the 3rd English batsman to score a ton in his debut Test against India after Valentine and Cook. All three batsmen scored their tons in India. Overall, Jennings became the 14th player to score a century on Test debut against India.

Jennings also became the 7th overseas-born to score a debut hundred for England after KS Ranjitsinhji (born in India), Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi (India), Sir Pelham Warner (Trinidad), Andrew Strauss (South Africa), Matt Prior (South Africa) and Jonathan Trott (South Africa).

Cook and Jennings became the 6th opening pair for England in 2016, the most for any country. India have used 5 opening pairs this year, while Australia, West Indies, England and Zimbabwe have used 4 each.  Cook has been a part of 5 of these 6 stands, partnering Alex Hales, Ben Duckett, Hameed, Joe Root and Jennings, while Hales and Compton opened in the other occasion. The last instance of England using six different opening pairs in a calendar year was in 1986.

This is the 21st consecutive Test for India under Virat Kohli, and till now, he is yet to play with same XI. Ajinkya Rahane was the only player to play under him in all Tests before this match.

Cook became the 1st batsman from England to go past 2,000-run mark against India. Overall, he became 6th batsman to score 2,000 runs against India in Tests after Ricky Ponting (2,555 runs), Clive Lloyd (2,344), Javed Miandad (2,228), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (2,171) and Clarke (2,027 runs). Cook is currently on 2,027 as well, on par with Clarke.

When he dismissed Moeen on Day One, Ashwin went past Javagal Srinath’s tally of 236 Test wickets. Currently, Ashwin stands at 7th spot with 239 scalps, after Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), Zaheer Khan (311), Bishan Singh Bedi (266) and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (242).

With 1,369 runs in Tests in 2016, Jonny Bairstow is now the 4th highest run-getter in a calendar year for England. Bairstow went past Cook’s tally of 1,364 runs in 2015. Bairstow is behind only Michael Vaughan (1,481 runs in 2002), Root (1,385 in 2015) and Dennis Amiss (1,379 in 1974).

The catch of Root was Kohli’s 48th Test catch. He went past Mohinder Amarnath’s tally of 47, and is currently 13th in terms of most catches by a non-wicketkeeper Indian player.
