All eyes were on Mohammad Hafeez as he came out to bat at Sharjah on Friday. Everyone expected him to complete his maiden double-century but the Pakistan opener was dismissed just three runs shy of his double ton. Varun Arora looks at the Pakistan batsmen who were dismissed on 190s.
Mohammad Hafeez was batting on 178 when the play was called off on the first day of the third Test between Pakistan and New Zealand at Sharjah on Wednesday. Australian cricketer, Phil Hughes’ demise made him wait for one more day as the second day’s play at Sharjah was suspended on Thursday. Hafeez and skipper Misbah-ul-Haq came out to bat on a sombre Friday morning. He didn’t look as fluent and charismatic as he was during the earlier part of his innings which he played more than a day back. His partner Misbah vanished in a matter of few minutes after the start of the day’s play as he edged a Tim Southee delivery to the wicketkeeper.
Hafeez hit few boundaries and collected few singles and made entry into the 190s. Previously he had reached 196 against Sri Lanka at Colombo in 2012. This time he wanted to get past it, but he fell into the trap laid by Ish Sodhi. Sodhi bowled a short delivery and Hafeez who tried to pull it out of the park top-edged it straight to the deep square-leg fielder. What would have been a fine double hundred was cut short by three runs. Hafeez walked back to the pavilion quietly without showing much emotion. Later, Hafeez wrote on Twitter, “R.I.P Phil Hughes … I dedicated my best test score 197 to him…we all wil miss u as we r all play this sport as a family.”
