MS Dhoni’s 82 against England in 5th Test at The Oval: Statistical Highlights

MS Dhoni’s brave 82 against England at The Oval was an innings of character. It helped India gain some respectability from a situation where they were under serious threat of being bundled out under 100. Nishad Pai Vaidya looks at some interesting statistics surrounding Dhoni’s knock.

Indian captain MS Dhoni battled with the England attack on Day One of the fifth Test at The Oval. With wickets falling around him, he stood tall and essayed a fantastic knock. This innings was an example for his teammates for its mixture of caution and intent. Though he was watchful, he latched onto the opportunities to score and put a little bit of pressure on the England bowlers. This was Dhoni’s 12th half-century against England and he is yet to score a ton. His two highest scores against this opposition are 99 at Nagpur and 92 at The Oval in 2007.

Dhoni is now second on the list for  batsmen who have scored the most runs against England without hitting a century. Ashley Nourse leads the list. Here are the numbers:

Dhoni also now has the most runs in an overseas series as captain-wicketkeeper of a side. He stands way ahead with a total of 349 in the five Tests of the ongoing series against England.
