The Ranji Trophy 2015-16 is now entering the proverbial ‘business end’ of the tournament. Three teams each from Team A and Team B and two from Team C will go to the quarter-finals at the end of this round. As things stand only one team — Mumbai — has definitely progressed till the quarter-final round. Other teams such as Bengal, Assam, Gujarat, and Saurashtra have a good chance of qualification, but they are not yet through for sure. Shiamak Unwalla shows what each team has to do in order to progress in the tournament. COMPLETE COVERAGE: Ranji Trophy 2015-16
NOTE: An outright win gives the winning team 6 points and the losing team 0 points. A draw gives the team that secures the first-innings lead 3 points, and the team that concedes the first-innings lead 1 point. A tie gives both teams one point each. If there is no decision at the end of the first innings of both sides, each team gets 1 point. If the match is abandoned without a ball being bowled both teams get 1 point. Quotient is the runs per wicket ‘for’ divided by runs per wicket ‘against.’ READ: Ranji Trophy 2015-16: Top 5 performances from Round 8
GROUP A:
Bengal and Assam: Both Bengal and Assam have an excellent chance of qualification. The fact that they play each other in their last match of the round means that EITHER TEAM WILL DEFINITELY PROGRESS to the quarter-final, regardless of the result. Whoever wins outright (6 points) or by first-innings lead (3 points) will progress. However, even in the event of a draw, the side that does not get the first-innings lead can still qualify IF Karnataka do not get 3 points and/or Vidarbha do not win outright. Meanwhile, if either of Bengal or Assam wins outright, the other can STILL qualify if both Karnataka and Vidarbha suffer outright defeats. Whichever team gets at least 3 points goes through.
Whichever team gets at least 1 point goes through IF Karnataka do not get 3, and/or if Vidarbha do not win outright.
Delhi: There are two scenarios for Delhi, one in which the Bengal vs Assam match ends in an outright result and one in which it does not result in an outright win. If the Bengal vs Assam match does not end in an outright win, Delhi can progress if Karnataka lose outright or scores les on Quotient AND if Vidarbha get less than 3 points or score less on Quotient. If the Bengal vs Assam match ends in an outright win, Delhi will progress only if Karnataka lose outright or score less on Quotient AND if Vidarbha get less than 3 points or score less on Quotient. Vidarbha: An outright win ensure Vidarbha go through. If they get the first-innings lead, they have to rely on Karnataka getting no more than 1 point, while also being above Delhi and Karnataka in Quotient.
Vidarbha need 6 points to go through.
If Vidarbha get 3 points, they need Karnataka to get no more than 1 point and also be above Karnataka and Delhi in Quotient.
Gujarat: Gujarat need at least a first-innings lead to progress. An outright win will obviously take them through. Even if they get only 1 point they can only be eliminated if the Punjab vs Tamil Nadu match produces an outright result AND Uttar Pradesh (UP) also win outright AND Tamil Nadu (TN) or UP are above Gujarat in Quotient. If they get no points, they will be eliminated ONLY IF the Punjab vs Tamil Nadu match produces and outright result AND UP beat Baroda outright. Gujarat need at least 3 points to qualify.
If they get at least 1 point they will be eliminated ONLY IF the Punjab vs TN match produces an outright result AND UP win outright AND either TN or UP are above Gujarat in quotient.
If Gujarat get 0 they will be eliminated ONLY IF the Punjab vs TN match produce an outright result AND UP beat Baroda outright.
If Punjab get 3 points they can qualify IF UP doesn’t beat Baroda outright or MP doesn’t beat Andhra AND with superior run rate.
Uttar Pradesh: UP need to win outright to stay in contention. Having got 6 points they then need Punjab to get less than 6 points and Gujarat to get less than 3 points. Even if they get the first-innings lead they can qualify IF they are above both Punjab and TN on run rate. READ: Ranji Trophy 2015-16: Uttar Pradesh squad and team preview
UP need 6 points, but also need Punjab to get less than 6 AND Gujarat to get less than 3 points.
If UP get 3 points they finish behind Mumbai and Gujarat, in which case they need to be above both Punjab and TN in run rate.
Tamil Nadu: TN need an outright victory but also need UP to not win outright and Gujarat to get 0 points. If UP, Gujarat, and TN all finish on 24 points TN need to be in the top 2 quotient. If TN get 3 points Punjab will get 1 (since they are playing each other) which then means that UP cannot get more than 1 point. Even then, TN need to be above UP and Punjab in quotient. READ: Ranji Trophy 2015-16: Tamil Nadu squad and team preview
TN need 6 points AND hope UP do not win outright AND hope Gujarat get 0 points. If UP, TN, and Gujarat finish on 24 points each then TN have to be in the top 2 in quotient.
If TN get 3 points, UP cannot get more than 1. TN also need to be above UP and Punjab in quotient.
Madhya Pradesh: MP need 6 points to reach 23. If Gujarat get 1 point they need to finish above the others.
Baroda: Baroda need to beat UP AND Punjab cannot get more than 1 point against TN AND TN cannot get more than 3 against Punjab AND MP cannot get more than 3 against Andhra.
Saurashtra: At least 3 points will ensure Saurashtra qualify. Even if they get 1 point they can only be eliminated IF the Kerala vs HP match has an outright result AND Jharkhand win outright AND Jharkhand finish above Saurashtra in quotient. READ: Ranji Trophy 2015-16: Saurashtra squad and team preview
Kerala: An outright win will see Kerala qualify. If they get 3 points they will go through UNLESS Jharkhand gets more than 3.
Jharkhand: If they win outright Saurashtra have to lose outright or get 1 point OR the Kerala vs HP match cannot be an outright result. If they get 3 points, HP should also get 3 and Kerala 1 AND HP have to finish below Jharkhand in quotient. READ: Jharkhand in Ranji Trophy 2015-16: Dark horses capable of causing few upsets
If Jharkhand get 6 they have to hope for Saurashtra to lose outright or get at most 1 point OR the Kerala vs HP match cannot be an outright result.
If Jharkhand get 3, HP have to get 3 and Kerala 1 AND HP have to finish below JHA in quotient.
Himachal Pradesh: If HP get 6 points, Saurashtra have to get NO MORE than 1 point OR Jharkhand cannot get 6 OR HP have to finish above Jharkhand in quotient. If HP get 3 points they will need Jharkhand to get 1 or 3 points and finish below HP in quotient.
Services: Services can only qualify if the Kerala vs HP match produces no result (thereby giving both teams 1 point each) AND if Jharkhand loses outright AND Services finish above Kerala in quotient. READ: Ranji Trophy 2015-16: Services squad and team preview
