In the last match of the two-Test series against Bangladesh, Shivnarine Chanderpaul completed a unique feat of witnessing 500 times his teammates dismissed from the other end in Test cricket. Bharath Seervi does statistical analysis on watching most dismissals from other end and partnership aggregates in Test cricket.
West Indies’ batting pillar, Chanderpaul, keeps creating and emulating some records especially in his later period of career. He has now witnessed 500 and more dismissals of his teammates from other end of the pitch. In the first innings of the second Test at Gros Islet, Jermaine Blackwood’s dismissal off Al-Amin Hossain was the 500th time Chanderpaul was batting at the other end when a wicket fell. In all, at the end of the series, he has witnessed (or whatever can be the appropriate term) 506 dismissals from the other end.
Chanderpaul made his Test debut in 1994. He was always under the shadow of Brian Lara. But once Lara retired, Chanderpaul has become the backbone of the declining West Indies team. In the recent years, he has showed enormous patience and strong desire to carry on as long as possible in Tests. The wickets keep falling at the other end, but he stands firm. In the 18th year of his career, Chanderpaul has witnessed 500 or more times the batsman at the other end getting out, and he is the first batsman to record this unique feat.
The batsman second to Chanderpaul is Rahul Dravid who witnessed 453 dismissals as a batsman in his Test career in 286 innings. Chanderpaul overcame Dravid’s mark in the final Test series of Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar on November 8, 2013 at Kolkata. No other batsman has seen 400 or more dismissals — Allan Border (364) and Sachin Tendulkar (350) are the others in the club of watching 350 or more dismissals. The table below lists the complete list.
