Ravindra Jadeja is certainly unique in the cricketing world. For someone who was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings at an astronomical $ 2 million, he has flattered to deceive on most occasions. For someone whose hairstyles garnered more attention than the runs he scored or the wickets he took till not long back, he certainly has come a long way — at least in the publicity stakes, as far as the Indian team is concerned. All one has to do is type in “Sir” on Google and among the suggested options that comes up immediately is “Sir Ravindra Jadeja“. And you can bet your last dollar that this in being trolled on Facebook and other Social Media sites as we speak.
The moniker “Sir” came into being after he notched up three triple centuries in Ranji Trophy a span of 13 months. He was picked in the side as a batsman who could bowl a bit. Against Australia he proved to be most effective with the ball, getting Michael Clarke out with alarming regularity. His hairstyle earned him the title of “Rockstar” and he seems to be enjoying every bit of attention coming his way. In today’s age publicity is always welcome and being in the news an art form in itself.
And then came the tweets that sealed it all. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni joined the social media bandwagon having a laugh at Jadeja’s expense by posting humorous tweets about his Chennai Super Kings and India all-rounder. Suresh Raina discovered he could tweet and not blame his nephew, and Ravichandran Ashwin decided to spin a tweet of a different kind.
The news media picked it up. They had found a new “Rockstar” which would generate more pageviews. Soon enough, everyone was tweeting about ‘Sir’ Ravindra Jadeja. Overnight he had become an internet phenomenon of sorts. To add to the mix, he even fashioned an improbable victory against the Royal Challengers after getting caught off a no-ball. This only added to the kind of jokes reserved only for the legendary Tamil film superstar Rajnikanth.
Needless to say Ravindra Jadeja has now become the Rajnikanth of the cricketing world, at least in terms of the jokes going around. As is the norm today, anything that keeps you in the news is welcome and marketable. The social media aficionados share their Jadeja jokes and raise laughter, but guess who is laughing the loudest? Ravindra Jadeja himself! Thanks to the hyperactivity about him on the internet, he has risen as a true phenomenon. And cashing on his marketability, the young man is laughing all the way to the bank!
