Rilee Rossouw of South Africa bagged two ducks, both golden, in his ODI career’s first two innings. He became just the second player to get two golden ducks in ODI career’s first two innings. Bharath Seervi lists the players who got a duck in their second inning after a duck already in their ODI debut.
Rilee Rossouw have not had a good start to his One-Day International (ODI) career. He is yet to leave a ball in his ODI career of two matches. Well, he has got out for golden duck in both his ODIs he played, both against Zimbabwe. Rossouw made his debut at Bulawayo on August 21 replacing Hashim Amla, who was rested. He was run out by Malcolm Waller on the very first ball he faced coming as an opener. He was given second chance by resting AB de Villiers in the Harare ODI on August 29. He was sent to bat at No 4 but the result was similar. He was caught at slip by John Nyumbu off the bowling of Prosper Utseya who in the next ball completed his hat-trick.
Rossouw, with two golden ducks in career’s first two innings, became only the second player in the ODIs to achieve this dubious feat. The only other player to have done this is New Zealander Nathan McCullum in 2009. McCullum was bowled against Sri Lanka at Colombo (RPS) on September 9, 2009 and caught leg before against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi in the same year.
Overall 23 players have scored a duck in their second ODI outing having already registered a duck on ODI debut. Three players have got three ducks in their first three ODI innings. That is the highest number of consecutive ducks from debut in ODIs. Those three players are Shadab Kabir from Pakistan in 1996, Nicholas de Groot from Canada in 2003 and Peter Gillespie from Ireland in 2006. Rilee Rossouw shares his name in the list which also contains the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar also started his ODI career with two ducks, both of two balls, in 1989. Other notable batsman to have got such a start is New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. Below is the table listing all the players.
Three ducks in career’s first three ODI innings
In ODIs, 186 players have scored a duck on their ODI debut out of which 23 of them went on to score another duck in their next inning. A further three players scored another duck in the third inning aswell.
