The Untold Story of MS Dhoni: Some things which may or may not be a part of the biopic
There still are quite a few things from Dhoni's life which have not been shown in the rushes. Whether or not they are shown in the movie, we can only speculate.
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, the biggest film (well, I have been asked to write that) of this year, is just two days away from its release. The makers of the film have promoted it extensively from New Delhi to New York, with Captain Cool himself taking part in the promotional events. It is set for a huge worldwide release, with opening at a record 4,500 screens. Even a movie like Kabali, which had created a hysterical situation amongst the Indian Diaspora a few months back, was not released at this many screens. This tells a lot about the expectations from the biopic on the life of India’s most successful cricket caption.
As the release date approaches, the buzz has reached to unprecedented levels. Dhoni being a public figure, his fans know a fair bit about him. The fact that he was a TTE with Indian Railways and had a girlfriend before he met Sakshi has been shown in the trailers so far. However, there still are quite a few things which have not been shown in the rushes. Whether or not they are shown in the movie, we can only speculate. Let’s take a look at few such things from Dhoni’s life which may or may not be a part of the movie:
Deepika Padukone: The trailer has given us glimpses on Dhoni’s previous relationship. In a couple of songs that have come out so far, Sushant Singh Rajput, the reel Dhoni, can be seen romancing actress Disha Patni, portraying Dhoni’s former flame Priyanka Jha. It is being said that the Dhoni was in an intense relationship with Priyanka before he broke into the Indian team. But as fate would have it, the relation could not reach to marriage as Priyanka was killed in an accident.
Moving on, Dhoni found Sakshi, got married to her and settled down in life. But between Priyanka and Sakshi, his name got linked up with other ladies too. Most prominent name amongst them is of successful Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone. Apparently, in 2007, after publicly admiring Deepika and confessing that he had a crush on her, Dhoni invited her to watch a T20I against Australia. Deepika obliged and made it to the stands, and was duly spotted by the camera during live telecast. Deepika was reportedly seen with the Indian skipper in Australia as well, only a couple of months later, as the Indian team toured Down Under. Though this fling died very soon, it will be interesting if this part is shown in the movie.

Laxmi Raai: The same year, in 2008, when Dhoni was signed for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in the inaugural edition of IPL, a new chapter got added to his life when the name of CSK ambassador Laxmi Raai was linked with him. However, the link-up rumours died a natural death. Raai, a Gujarati actress popular down south, recently made her Hindi debut in Akira. She even confessed recently that she expects not to be shown in the movie. Well, this confession clears doubts, if any. Time will tell whether Raai is a part of the movie or not.
Delayed debut: What we all know is that Dhoni was picked for the Indian team after a tremendous series for India A in Kenya in 2003-04. However, what we do not know is that Dhoni could have made his debut much before, at least three years ahead of his original debut. The story goes like this: In the year 2001, ahead of the all-important Australia series at home (the same historic series remembered best for VVS Laxman’s 281 and Harbhajan Singh’s hat-trick), Dhoni was picked for the East Zone team for the Duleep Trophy. A good show in that tournament could have landed him a Team India berth, as the selectors were looking for a new wicket-keeper who can bat.
But here’s a twist in the tale. The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) officials could not convey the decision to Dhoni. Those were pre-social media days, and unlike today, when things start trending minutes after happening, communicating those days was difficult. By the time the selection news reached Dhoni, the East Zone team had left for Agartala. By then Deep Dasgupta had already donned the gloves in the first match. In the second match Dhoni was named 12th man. Had he got a chance he could have been a part of Team India much earlier, of course subject to his performance. As it happened, India tried two keepers in the series — Nayan Mongia and Sameer Dighe.
We are eager to know whether this part is presented in the movie or not.
Three seniors: The trailer of MS Dhoni: The Untold Story portrays the Indian skipper talking to the national selectors over a video conferencing, demanding the ouster of three senior cricketers. Ever since the trailer showing this part has come out, there are speculations in the media as to who those three players are? But that part has been brilliantly concealed by the makers. However, it is yet not clear whether Dhoni will reveal those names in the movie, thus inspiring fresh controversy. If he decides against revealing the names he may emerge as the real hero of his biopic rather than turning villain for taking the names and inviting their fans’ wrath.
