All-rounder Stuart Binny made his One-Day International (ODI) debut for India against New Zealand in the fourth match at Hamilton on Tuesday. Stuart Binny is the son of 1983 World Cup winning member Roger Binny. The Binnys are the third father-son pair to represent India in ODIs. Sudatta Mukherjee has more on the family contributions to India in ODIs.

1. Sunil and Rohan Gavaskar: Little Master Sunil Gavaskar was India’s batting spearhead in Tests, though he was a late bloomer in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and ended up with 3,092 runs from 108 matches. The maestro was also part of the 1983 World Cup winning team. Unlike the senior Gavaskar, Rohan was a left-hand bats and left-arm spinner who failed to live up to the high and unfair expectation of him from his countrymen. He played just 11 ODIs, averaging 18.87 with the bat and taking one wicket at 74.00.

2. Yograj and Yuvraj Singh: Yograj was right-arm medium pacer and his selection into ODI team came as a surprise to many. However, he played six ODIs for India and picked up four wickets. An injury forced him to give up professional cricket and enter Punjab film industry subsequently. Son Yuvraj Singh has been a sensational left-handed batsman and left-arm spinner who has played ODIs since 2000. His major breakthrough came when he along with Mohammad Kaif won the NatWest Trophy when the duo scored 121 off 106 balls. Over the years, he earned his spot in the ODI side and in 2011 World Cup he won the Player of the Tournament award for his all-round performance. Yuvraj has been part of Under-19 World Cup winning team 1999-00, ICC world Twenty20 2007 winning side and 2011 World Cup winning side.

3. Roger and Stuart Binny: Roger Binny was a bits-and-pieces but invaluable all-rounder for India. He was the leading wicket-taker for India in the 1983 World Cup.  He played 72 ODIs, scored 629 runs and took 77 wickets. Son Stuart Binny, who made his debut for India on Tuesday, has made waves in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has been one of the success stories of Rajasthan Royals and has often helped the team with his hard hitting and scoring valuable runs at the death overs.

Whether he will be able to get out of his father’s shadow we will have to wait and see. Stuart once had said, “It is not easy being Roger Binny’s son.”

It’s never easy for any son to step into the illustrious shoes of his father.
