Akarshit Gomel made light of difficult conditions to hit a century for Vijay Manjrekar XI against Vijay Merchant XI on the first day in round 2 of the 26th Sportstar Trophy MCA Under 19 selection trials today.

Number three batsman skipper Gomel hit 14 fours in his 113 which came off 222 balls and 251 minutes on a damp Sassanian ground wicket to help boost his team's total to 232 in 73 overs before falling to left-arm spinner Yashraj Waghela on the last ball of the day.

Merchant XI pegged back their rivals by grabbing wickets at regular intervals, with spinners Waghela (2-34) and Shivam Mishra (2-35) doing the bulk of the damage after play started an hour late due to dampness in the wicket.

In the other league tie at Fort Vijay ground, medium pacer Mahesh Sankpal picked up a five-wicket haul, including the scalp of top scorer Arman Jaffer with the second new ball, to help Khandu Rangnekar XI restrict Dattu Phadkar XI to 284-6.

Number four Jaffer missed his ton by five runs and his 155-ball knock contained 11 fours and came in 212 minutes. (PTI)
