Former Indian captain is very impressed by debutant Ravichandran Ashwin’s performance in the first Test against West Indies.
Ashwin who made his debut memorable with a five-wicket haul (six for 47) helped India bundle out the West Indies for 180 in their second innings to set themselves a target of 276 in the first Test.
Heaping praises on the young spinner, Kapil said, “Ashwin bowled really well. I was very impressed. The reason he is different is because he has got lot of variety. “
Kapil Dev also liked the number of variations Ashwin has in store. Kapil was quoted in Mid Day as saying,” He brings a fresh lease of life into the attack with five different variations -- more than any other spinner in the world today.”
Ashwin bagged six for 47 to bowl out West Indies for 180 runs in the second innings. He also used the carom ball well to get rattle the stumps of Marlon Samuels and Darren Sammy.
Kapil feels Ashwin has the potential to lead India’s spin attack in future. "With so much variation and a calm head, he has what it takes to lead India's spin attack in the future.
I hope India get an excellent Test bowler in him," he added.
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the seventh Indian bowler to take five-for on Test debut in the first Test at the Kotla on Tuesday.
His six for 47 is the second-best effort by an Indian bowler on his maiden appearance in Test. Ashwin’s match haul of nine wickets is bettered by only one Indian - Hirwani’s 16 on debut against West Indies. In fact, Hirwani got eight wickets in each of the innings.
