Angelo Mathews and Bhuvneshwar Kumar impressed with the ball as Pune Warriors India restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 150 for five after in their IPL 2012 match at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.
Electing to bat first, Gambhir and McCullum punished Pune Warriors India bowlers hitting them for runs all over the park.
Kolkata skipper Gambhir, who has been in a fine form this season, took charge right from the beginning after electing to bat at the Eden Gardens.
Gambhir lathered four boundaries and two sixes to score 56 off 36 balls, and added 113 runs with New Zealander Brendon McCullum to provide his side the upperhand.
McCullum got in to the groove after a slow start and raced to 42 off 43 hitting five boundaries and a six.
The first wicket stand between Gambhir and McCullum was broken when Pune spinner Murali Kartik had the KKR skipper caught by Mithun Manhas in the 13th over.
All-rounder Angelo Mathews struck in the next over trapping McCullum in front of the wicket, to shift momentum towards his side.
After their dismissal, KKR garnered only 35 runs in the remaining 6.2 overs after losing openers and lost three more wickets.
Brief Scores: KKR 150 for 5 in 20 overs (Gautam Gambhir 56, Brendon McCullum 42; Angelo Mathews 2 for 17, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2 for 27) vs PWI
