Delhi Daredevils all-rounder Irfan Pathan sounded pleased after their crushing win over Mumbai Indians and said its team’s all-round performances that has given the Delhi based franchise this start and the intention is to keep getting better.
“It’s a good collective team effort. It’s been a good year and we have been playing some wonderful cricket. We want to make sure that we keep getting better,” Irfan was quoted saying by Delhi Daredevils official website.
“We always reflect whether we win or lose. It’s been a wonderful start compared to last year. We have a very good team but at the same time Virender Sehwag’s captaincy and the supporting staff have been helping us tremendously.”
Delhi bowled out Mumbai for 92, but the Baroda pacer is not looking much ahead and wants to stay in the present.
“We always made sure that we keep our foot down and never got ahead of ourselves. We always want to stay in the moment. At least I try to stay in the moment. Now since we have won this game, we have the next game to look forward to. It’s a long tournament, and we need to make sure that we keep going with the momentum.”
The 27-year-old said all the bowlers backed each other during the rout of Mumbai.
“Heading into this, we thought it’s going to be a great game in terms of the crowd and the runs scored. Mumbai’s wicket generally has bounce, but today it had a bit more in it and the way Shahbaz Nadeem started was outstanding, and the other bowlers backed up really well. I was really happy to see Ajit Agarkar bowl so well and Morne Morkel has been our best bowler, and I was pretty happy with my performance also. Umesh Yadav bowled a fiery spell as well. We didn’t expect to get them out for fewer than 100, but we have an attack, which can do so.”
Ross Taylor, Mahela Jayewardene and Kevin Pietersen recently joined the Delhi squad and Irfan feels it has given Delhi a big boost.
“They have been wonderful players and are top-class players. Most importantly, they are very good team players. They support each other and give their best on the field. Having them in the team is a big-time boost.”
Irfan doesn’t think the bowlers have had more of an impact on IPL 2012
“CSK chased 200 plus runs against RCB, so, I would say it’s been mixed so far. There have been some wonderful performances by the bowlers and some tremendous hitting by batsmen. If the pitch is flat, there is hardly anything a bowler can do and vice versa.”
The Delhi all-rounder admitted playing for India has helped his confidence.
“The confidence you get after playing for the country is pretty high. Playing for the country has helped me a lot. It has made me mentally tougher.”
