India reached a score of 88 runs in the first session but lost both the openers in their run chase against New Zealand of day four on the second Test on Monday.
Earlier, New Zealand were all-out for 248 in the first session of day four, setting India a target of 261 in the second Test match at Bengaluru.
Ashwin (5 for 69), who had a 12-wicket haul in the Hyderabad Test that India won by an innings and 115 runs, bowled quite beautifully to fox the Kiwi batsmen into errors as the visitors ended the day at 232 for nine, just 244 runs in front with two more days left in the Test.
India needs 173 more runs to win with eight wickets in hand.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 365 & 248 (James Franklin 41, Ross Taylor 35; Ravichandran Ashwin 5 for 69) lead India 353 & 88 for 2 (Virender Sehwag 38, Gautam Gambhir 34; Trent Boult 1 for 23) by 173 runs.
