Vernon Philander grabbed his eighth five-wicket haul in Test cricket as New Zealand were bowled out for 45 against South Africa in the first session of Day One of the first Test at Cape Town on Wednesday. In doing so, Philander became the 11th bowler in Test cricket to bag a five-wicket haul in the first session of the match.
Morne Morkel picked up three wickets to add to New Zealand’s woes. Dale Steyn became the third fastest bowler to pick up 300 Test wickets when he dismissed Doug Bracewell for two.
New Zealand reached a new low when they were bowled out for 45, 34 runs less than their previous lowest total in against South Africa in Tests. This was New Zealand third lowest total ever in Test cricket. Their lowest came against England at Auckland in 1955 when they were bundled out for 26.
They managed to survive for only 19.2 overs which is the least the any team has managed to survive in a completed innings in a Test match.
Kane Williamson was the top-scorer for the Kiwis with a 19-ball 13.
