Former India coach, Gary Kirsten has lauded Virender Sehwag’s record-breaking 219-run innings against West Indies in the recently-concluded One-Day International (ODI) series and backed him to have big impact in the upcoming tour Down Under.
Kirsten was quoted in Times of India as saying,” He has the ability to do remarkable things on a cricket field. I'm sure he'll be hoping to have a big impact in Australia.”
The South African coach feels India have developed a great rivalry with the Australian team and the upcoming Test series will be very competitive. He said,” They are playing really well at the moment with many players in form. India enjoy playing against Australia and have a good record against them.
“With Zaheer Khan fit again, it will help considerably. My guess is it will be a great Test series and another good advertisement for Test cricket. “
Kirsten also hoped Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar gets his much awaited hundredth hundred sooner but feels the batting maestro would be rather focused on winning Test series in Australia. He said,” It will be an awesome milestone for him to reach, but knowing Sachin he will be focused on helping India win a series in Australia.”
Kirsten also praised the Indian captain MS Dhoni for his leadership skills. While talking about his experience with the Indian team, Kirsten said,” We all worked really hard on focusing our attention on what we could achieve as a team. But working with MS (Dhoni) was an absolute pleasure; he is an inspiration as a leader”
Kirsten also added that he enjoyed his stint as the India coach and wished the Indian team does well in future.
