Former South Africa batsman Graeme Pollock feels that Test cricket is in the verge of extinction.
"It's ludicrous. The minimum number of Tests these teams (South Africa and Australia) should play against each other is four," Pollock said.
"Australia are the premiere series for South Africa and that should be respected. Test cricket is dying a slow death and this kind of thing does not help," he said.
Another former South Africa batsman Peter Kirsten concurred with this view.
"It looks like both South Africa and Australia wanted to maxims their home summers, that's why they agreed to this itinerary.
"But they could have cut out a Twenty20 match or a one-dayer to make room for another Test," he said.
Cricket South Africa executive consultant Michael Owen-Smith denied that the decision was motivated by finances but rather by next year's World Twenty20.
"It's absolutely essential that (coach) Gary Kirsten has a reasonable number of matches to prepare the squad to win that tournament," Owen-Smith told the daily.
Although Owen-Smith argued that Test matches required a minimum of a week in between them, India last year played three Tests within 22 days in South Africa. (PTI)
