Australian selectors brought in middle-order batsman Steve Smith in place of young Usman Khawaja for the second ODI against Sri Lanka at Adelaide Oval under mysterious circumstances. Khawaja was left out after playing just one ODI, without any mention of a possible injury, as reported by Sydney Morning Herald.
Khawaja was dropped from the Australian side after playing just one ODI, where he scored three runs before being run out in the first ODI against Sri Lanka at MCG.
Khawaja, who is considered as a serious contender as Michael Hussey’s replacement in the Australian Test squad was handed an ODI debut in the first match against Sri Lanka alongside Phil Hughes to audition for tours of India and England.
The lack of chances for one of the future prospects of the Australian side reflects the period instability in the selection of the national side.
With Michael Clarke, David Warner and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade set to return to the side in the third ODI, there is added pressure on the likes of Aaron Finch and Khawaja to keep their spots for the last two ODIs against Sri Lanka.
Cricket Australia left out Mitchell Star and Mitchell Johnson as ‘precautionary measures’ as the duo had ‘niggles.’
