Delhi Government, which had decided to give cash awards to captain MS Dhoni and four players of the Indian cricket team for the World Cup win, will now send them cheques after realising that it is not possible to get all the players together here for a function.
After the Indian team won the World Cup in early April, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had announced an award of Rs 2 crore for Dhoni and Rs 1 crore each for four Delhi players -- Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and Ashish Nehra.
The decision to send the players cheque was taken at a cabinet meeting presided over by Dikshit.
The Chief Minister said she had written letters to all the five players inviting them for a felicitation but after realising that it would be impossible to get all the players together soon here, the government decided to send them cheques.
"We hoped that the players will be able to come (for a felicitation function). I had written letters to them. The players are on tours and it looks impossible to get them all together. So we have decided to send them cheques," Dikshit said after the cabinet meeting.
