The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have decided to nominate Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh for the prestigious Arjuna award after the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs revised the deadline for submission of nominees to accommodate cricketers.
Previously, BCCI fail to nominate players before the previous April 30 deadline, stating that the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs didn’t inform them about it.
However, in a reconciliatory gesture, the Sports ministry on Thursday made an exception for Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by extending the last date for filing nominations for Arjuna awards to July 20.
"The joint secretary of ministry of sports Mukul Chatterjee personally called up to inform that the last date for filing the Arjuna award nomination has been extended till July 20. After the telephonic conversation, the BCCI has also received a fax stating the same from the ministry," a senior BCCI official told.
As of now, Team India vice-captain Virat Kohli is the front-runner for his prolific performance in the ODIs throughout the last season. The other name that can come up for discussion is that of Ravichandran Ashwin.
"Whatever miscommunication existed is a thing of past now. Obviously, we will be filing nominations. The BCCI president, secretary and the national selectors will assess as to who is the most eligible candidate for the award," the official added.
Yuvraj was awarded the Player of the tournament in 2011 World Cup where he played a crucial role in India triumph. He scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets. Presently, he is recovering from a rare germ-cell cancer and is undergoing training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
The BCCI will take the final decision on the players who will be nominated in a meeting on July 16 in Mumbai in the presence of BCCI president N Srinivasan, Secretary Sanjay Jagdale and the national selectors.
“Both the players have done well for India. While Yuvraj played a crucial role in us winning the World Cup, Kohli has been consistent,” a top BCCI official was quoted as saying in the Indian Express.
