UDRS: Malediction or Benediction

Priyank Mangal, December 21, 2011, 12:03 am
After thinking of, how laconic one can be to describe India’s last tour to Australia, they all shall agree nonetheless to use the word ‘controversial’. Sydney test match was highly controversial as the Indian team believed they had a higher share of bad decision and criticized the Umpiring heavily. After the match the Indian team sought to replace one of the umpires for the 3rd Test, going against a prior agreement stating that "Neither team has a right to object to an umpire's appointment."
The road to bring Umpire Decision Review system was not a glib as it was introduced for the first time in test matches in 2009 and was made compulsory, but this stand was not considered placatory and the status shifted to “if

BALLS OF FURY: Legends of Fast Bowling

Priyank Mangal, December 15, 2011, 10:53 pm
The year 2011 witnessed some ebullient fast bowlers making their mark in the longest format of the game. Fast bowling needs aggression, skills, diligence and accuracy. They are sheer gossamers in the finest of bowling line ups. Fast bowling is a lagniappe, and one should be determined and thoughtful while bowling fast being tactful is important as one should not waste that gift. The year saw some good debutante bowling with sheer pace and impressing the cricketing fraternity with their glimpse. The likes of Doug Bracewell, James Pattinson, Vernon Philander and Pat Cummings came into limelight in no amount of time.
Talking about fast bowlers let us look back on some of the greats of the Gentlemen’s game who were panoply of

AUSTRALIA: DOWN AND UNDER ??

Priyank Mangal, December 14, 2011, 6:04 pm
The baggy green caps would be back on the field after losing the last test match to New Zealand in the Trans Tasman series. Before half a decade the story was pretty different from what it seems now. The team used to beleaguer its opponent. They bamboozled every hurdle on and off the field and aims victory like a chatoyant. But changes do happen and table do turn, the diaphanous turnover did took place and the Australian team was falling upside down from the zenith.
The legacy was not ephemeral, they ruled the game for over a decade, but the question is what is going to happen next? Is the harbinger indicating that Australia cannot dominate the world cricket again? Will the past imbricate Australia over West Indies? The

Santhakumaran Sreesanth, what comes into your mind when you hear this name? You associate this name with a guy who is engaged in controversies on and off the field. We have heard a numerous of cricket pundits saying that, “Sreesanth cannot control his emotions on the pitch”. More or less only a few people stood by his side in rough times and others considered him a macabre.
At times Sreesanth is flippant and casual in his approach for the game but what we all can’t see is his intent, his love for the game and his habile nature. His hunger for wicket never ends and no matter how strained or tired he is, whenever given an opportunity he made the best out of it. He always bent his back, swung the ball both ways and

Some Like It BIG : 82 to 219

Priyank Mangal, December 12, 2011, 1:39 am
It took 2961 matches for a cricketer to score a double hundred in the shorter version of the game and it was none other than the superman from India, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar who became the first man on the planet to reach 200 runs.
John Edrich’s 82 was the highest score in the first ever ODI, which was then broken by DL Amiss in 1972 who scored the first ever hundred in an ODI and made a score of 103. Roy Fredricks broke that record inside a year with his 105, which was then broken by England’s David Lloyd, who scored 116 not out against Pakistan in the year 1974.
Glenn Turner, a tremendous opener for New Zealand crossed the score of 150 for the first time as he played a mammoth 171 not out runs inning against a weak

The Unsung Debut- First look at Rahul Sharma

Priyank Mangal, December 9, 2011, 2:42 pm
The cynosure of the fourth One Day International between India and West Indies was the comely batting of Virender Sehwag. The Nawab of Nazafgarh punished every bowler of the opposition when he played some fierce strokes all over the park. This phenomenal batting effort proved to be a record breaking one when he surpassed the first double hundred made by the man himself Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar against South Africa at Gwalior He scored 219 runs in just 140 balls which is the highest individual score in One Day Internationals. Virender Sehwag, who was the Talk of the Town in the previous game Overshadowed a good debut by an emerging spinner form Punjab.

Behind Wickets: The search is Still ON

England is dealing with a problem for the last 8 years. The problem that many test playing nations have faced so far including India, Pakistan and recently Australia. The English team management is unable to fill the void which was created when Alec Stewart decided to hung up his boots. Stewart was a very fine cricketer and scored more then 12000 runs at international level. At the time when the concept of batting wicket keeper was not known, His prolific touch with the bat and smart wicket keeping skills made him a genius both in front and behind the wicket. He got competition like other wicket keepers (Richard Blakey, Steve Rhodes, Warren Hegg and James Foster who were some other wicket keepers of his time) but his

VICTOR VIRAT

Priyank Mangal, October 24, 2011, 11:56 am
When Virat Kohli, the precociously talented batsman from Delhi, was asked about the lap of honor the Indian team gave to its senior most member, Sachin Tendulkar, he said: 'He (Sachin) has carried the burden of the nation for 21 years, it was time we carried him on our shoulders.' That statement signified what Tendulkar meant to the Indian cricket team and the hopes of a nation for over two decades. There were times when he single handedly held the key to Indian success. With the passage of time, quite a few talented youngsters joined him in the ranks and helped reduce the burden on his shoulders. However, as they say “There never was, there isn’t and there will never be another Sachin Tendulkar.” But, India has

Need for Speed: First Look At Varun Aaron

Priyank Mangal, October 23, 2011, 6:14 pm
Varun Aaron playing his debut One Day International against England at the Wankhede stadium looks well burnished as he was bowling the the right channels, most of the deliveries were full and straight, some odd deliveries bowled at the good length kept low.He bowled a decent first spell but was wicketless and was then asked to bowl the second spell in the later part of the inning which proved to be a dream debut spell. The brawn power package who plays for Jharkhand at domestic level was stiff but calm, he continuously bowled at a decent pace and the good thing about the last spell was he never tried to innovate much of his bowling, he bowled accurately with good pace which got him 3 crucial wickets. He knocked off the

Was it Gravity :what goes up comes down

Attitude is a value which one must keep within oneself , what we all saw in this series was the intent by which host went on the field, that intent was revenge, after being blistered by the Englishmen on their own soil, the clandestine which can be possibly inferred was 'revenge'. one must say it is not always bad to take revenge when the purpose which it serve is helping the cause. any welt on the attitude of world champions need to be cured as soon as it can get, possibly questions would be raised about why are we lions in our own den? Is this the true nature of world champions? these are tenable queries but can't be answered in the war of words, the intent with which India is playing the present series answers the second

future gentery of indian cricket

It was really important for ravindra jadeja to fancy his comeback and he rightly did so, whereas R.ashwin was in and out on various occasions(not from the team but from the playing XI) after a facile performance by Harbhajan singh on England tour made Ashwin a permanent member in the squad. on terms of batting Jadeja is far more of a frontier rather then a slogger. No doubt Harbhajan singh was a really good bowler and on his day would turn the table all square, but in modern day terms ashwin and jadeja both seem to be frustrating bowlers(Frustrating Bowlers- Bowlers with a good economy and takes wicket not only on good deliveries but also plays with the mind set of the batsmen). in ethical terms this is a premier difference
