Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid on Friday announced his retirement from Test cricket in a press conference.

Dravid, a veteran of 164 Tests and 344 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) said he had a wonderful time playing for the Indian team, and now the time was right to pass the baton to young cricketers.

He said,” I could never have imagined a journey so long and so fulfilling. I have had a wonderful time, but now it is time for a new generation of young players to make their own history and take the Indian cricket team even further.”

Former India captain and batting legend Rahul Dravid Friday announced his retirement from Test cricket to bring the curtains down on his illustrious 16-year-old career.

Addressing a press conference at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore where he was first spotted by Keki Tarapore, an emotional Dravid, 39, bid farewell to the longer format of the game in which he is the second highest run scorer (13,288) after teammate Sachin Tendulkar. Dravid has 36 Test centuries from 164 matches and scored at an average of 52.31.

"I announce my retirement from all forms of international and domestic cricket. I had to make place for the next generation of cricketers," Dravid said.

Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene was unhappy with the defeat but supported his premier fas bowler Lasith Malinga during the press conference.


"Lasith is not a worry. They (the batsmen) do get away but it's not a big issue. In a long tournament, a couple of such shows are not an issue," Jayawardene said after his side's 15-run defeat to Australia at the Gabba.

Australian captain Michael Clarke came down hard on his bowlers for leaking runs in powerplay and death overs after his side's hard-fought 15-run win over Sri Lanka in the first final of the tri-series.

"I was looking for an early night (finish)...and kept thinking that I can't lose from that position. Australian Spin legend Shane Warne was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame at the annual Allan Border Medal ceremony held in Melbourne on Monday night.

Hall of Fame chairman David Crow said the 42-year-old's contribution to cricket had been huge.

"He revived leg-spin, combining accuracy with variety and enormous turn, even on unhelpful pitches," Crow said in a statement.

"It was the timing of his performances in addition to his sheer weight of wickets that further underlined his legendary status," he added.
