The maverick avatar of Gavaskar was refreshing. It was a breath of fresh air from the man who had remained unbeaten on 36 after batting for 60 overs in the inaugural match of the 1975 World Cup against England at the Lord’s. At Nagpur in 1987 Gavaskar’s attacking instincts took over.
