Australia vs England, 2nd ODI, England in Australia 2013-14

Commentary

Australia won by 1 wkt | Australia Vs England Live Score, 2nd ODI

Another riveting game of cricket comes to an end. You've got to feel for England though. Cook's reaction after Maxwell's wicket said it all. He was really charged up and the desperation to win a game was quite evident on his face but unfortunately, his boys couldn't quite hold their composure when needed. Meanwhile, Australia cannot put a foot wrong. But for Faulkner today, you could argue that they weren't the best side today. That's how the game goes. A crucial moment here and there is all what matters. The action shifts to the SCG for the third ODI on Sunday. Do not miss out the action. Join us back at 14:20 Local Time for all that unfolds. Take care and goodbye!
AltCricket tweets: Can't remember consistently worse captaincy than Alastair Cook on this tour. Tactically inept, melting under pressure. #AUSvENG
Brydon Coverdale tweets: Michael Bevan after 232-match ODI career: 21 sixes, average of 53. James Faulkner after 14 ODIs: 21 sixes, average of 53 #AusvEng
Brendan Taylor tweets: Well that was a pretty entertaining game! #AUSvENG Great to watch cricket continuing to grow.
Lisa Sthalekar tweets: Holly smokes what game. Amazing. What belief does this @CricketAus team have now? Cricket is alive & well because of this summer #thanksboys
Shane Warne tweets: WOW, WOW, WOW from @FaulknerC25, unbelievable, amazing & so happy for him !!! Well done champion.... Totally awesome display...
Michael Vaughan tweets: Great advert for ODI cricket... @FaulknerC25 take a bow.. That was as good a finishing innings as I have ever seen ...
Tom Moody tweets: Hats off @FaulknerC25 class, composure & some real animal competitive instinct. #AUSvENG
Here are a few tweets.
Clarke: 'Faulkner the new finisher. He's the new Michael Bevan. Probably he's not happy that he finished with 3 more balls to spare. Would have loved another last-ball finish maybe. Someone from the top-order didn't go out there and make a hundred and that's pretty disappointing. We've got some wonderful talent in the side. Maxi plays a lot of shots that many people can't play. His innings was crucial as well as he got the momentum going. It's nice to see the confidence in the side but as we've seen, England are a strong side and we'll have to be at our best everytime. Fantastic win, he deserves all the credit in the world.'
Faulkner: 'Thanks everyone for turning up today and supporting us. Tonight was a good night. I was pretty nervous. It's a special night but it's always good when Australia wins. This has to be the ultimate moment in my career so far.'
Faulkner is the Man of the Match for his 47-ball 69.
Cook: 'It took an unbelievable innings to beat us today. I thought Morgs batted really well to get us to a very good total but unfortunately we couldn't quite hold our nerve in the last few overs. We'll have to look at the last few overs and I've got to see if I got the things right as well. As I said, It took an amazing innings to beat us today.'
Michael Slater bows down to Faulkner before the latter says, 'I believed I could do it. I want to thank the crowd for the support. We had lot of batting left and in the end, what matters is a win. It's always nice to get over the line, today was a great day. I wanted to keep it simple, so didn't go for a big shots.'
The Australian team run onto the field as the crowd goes berserk. Maxwell, Warner, all are pumped. Distraught England players shake hands with the Aussies. Phew! What a game of cricket we've had. At 120/5, Australia were down and out and hopes of England's first win on the tour were very high. Glenn Maxwell and Brad Haddin batted sensibly to add 86 runs for the 6th wicket after Shaun Marsh's fine fifty. Nathan Coulter-Nile played a good hand alongside James Faulkner after Tim Bresnan removed both Haddin and Maxwell in the same over to put the visitors on top. Faulkner was very calm at the start. Maybe he knew he could hit sixes at will after his heroics at Mohali and in the end he was proved right. The England bowlers couldn't defend 25 runs off the last 2 overs. Stokes offered some very generous length balls to help Faulkner muscle them. Bresnan didn't do a fine job in the final over either and in the end, Australia have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
