MS Dhoni: 'We started off well with the ball but in the death overs, we conceded too many runs. The bowlers did not perform well. Hussey started off but we lost wickets at regular intervals. They had two leg-spinners who were bowling very well. As the match progressed, the pitch became slower. One of the established batsman had to stay there till the end. It is difficult to judge how many is too many. We cannot have a fixed game-plan like a Duckworth/Lewis. I was more than certain that I edged it and I told the umpire to. If I am 100% certain that I edged it, I tell the umpire and the opposition. The performances have been good but we have to improve our death bowling. Not one bowler has bowled yorkers and it will be a critical factor as the tournament progresses. We have been consistent in the fielding department.'
MS Dhoni is the MoM for his match-winning unbeaten 67 off 37 balls.
Cameron White: 'It was a good target in the end. We batted exceptionally well in the last five overs after getting off poorly at the start. The loss is disappointing as we were in a good position. We were poor in some areas but we have a young side that is improving. We have to learn from our mistakes and perform well in the remaining games.'
Michael Hussey played a wonderful knock and got Chennai off to a great start. However, Amit Mishra (4-0-26-3) pulled things back by taking wickets at regular intervals. Karan Sharma bowled an excellent spell of 4-1-8-0 as the pressure mounted. The turning point of the match was when Mishra dropped Dhoni on 0 off Steyn. The Chennai skipper made his opponents pay dearly and he blasted a brutal 67 to get Chennai over the line.
Stephen Fleming: 'We did a few things pretty badly but we luckily had MS Dhoni who finished the game. Some great hitting from him helped us win. We should have restricted Hyderabad to 130 but they scored plenty of runs in the last five overs. We lost wickets at crucial intervals but the key was the Dhoni cameo. We would like to improve in some areas but I am happy that we are in the top half of the table at the start of the tournament.'
Life has come full circle for Ashish Reddy. He was on top of the world when he stroked a wonderful cameo to boost Hyderabad to a good total. However, he bowled a final over under pressure and wilted. Chennai have secured an important win here and Hyderabad will be gutted.
