Kolkata Knight Riders vs Kings XI Punjab, Final, IPL 2014

Commentary

Kolkata won by 3 wkts | Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Kings XI Punjab Live Score, Final

The 47-day carnival has come to an end. This time, despite being split into two halves (UAE and India), it was a tremendous success yet again. Eight teams battled hard and it was Kolkata who held their nerve when it mattered to be crowned champions. There were a lot of wonderful moments throughout and we hope we brought them out very well. It was an absolute pleasure bringing you all the action. Looking forward to your company on another occasion as the cricket season just doesn't stop. Good luck and goodbye from the entire team! Until next time, remember to have a good night and sleep tight. Sayonara for now!
Despite the big guns failing tonight, Saha and Vohra put their hands up and batted exceptionally well. The former also went on to register his maiden Indian T20 League hundred but unfortunately, he ends up on the losing side. They found someone every game to bail them out of trouble with the bat even when Maxwell and Miller weren't scoring those big runs but it was their bowling that was a little weak and in the end, Gambhir proved that his decision to field first was the right call indeed.
Some thoughts on a fantastic Punjab side's season: Punjab do not have the best of bowling attacks and it showed today. Even 200 was not a safe score and especially in Bangalore, they really had to be at their best to defend the score with the shorter boundaries. Unfortunately for them, Manish Pandey brought up his best tonight and he was literally unstoppable. Skipper Bailey credited Pandey by saying, 'it takes courage to hit a six next ball after a wicket.' Spare a thought for Akshar Patel, the best Indian all-rounder this year. He went for just 21 runs in his 4 overs and even against Chennai in Qualifier 2, when the other bowlers were smashed around, he went under 6 runs per over. If only he got the right support today, things might have been different for Bailey & Co.
The trophy is being handed over to Gambhir and the celebrations go wild. The entire team is jumping in joy while the fireworks go up in the background. Everyone wants to put a hand on that trophy and now the entire outfit pose with the cup. It's time for the Gangnam dance and it's Andre Russell and Robin Uthappa leading the pack. Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan is wearing a Punjab jersey and is posing with Preity Zinta.
Gambhir: 'A lot of credit goes to the entire team. After the first few games, a lot of people wrote us off and that's why a lot of credit goes to the team. This is a ground very difficult to defend and that's why we believed that we can chase down 200. Manish played very well and he was well supported by Yusuf. Saha played a great innings but Manish was exceptional tonight.'
Bailey: 'That was certainly a game worth the final. We just talked about the same stuff that we talked earlier. Hats off to Manish, to hit a six the next ball after a wicket takes some courage. We've got a very, very special bunch of guys and our guys can hold their heads high. We've seen some absolutely fantastic cricket in both countries (UAE, India) and I can proudly say that I was part of such a great final.'
Mohit Sharma (Purple Cap, leading wicket-taker): 'This is a really big thing for me. I am really happy. This time I bowled at the death as compared to last year where I used to bowl mainly with the new ball. I have learned a lot this year.'
Robin Uthappa (Orange Cap, leading run-scorer): 'It's quite surreal. I am lost for words but I am happy to contribute to the team in a meaningful manner. When I played with a broken toe the other day against Mumbai, that kind of broke the physical barrier for me.'
Akshar Patel: 'I feel really proud to get this award as there are so many other domestic and international bowlers and for me to get it is an incredible feeling. I try to stick to the basics and if someone plays well then it is my bad luck. I consider myself as a batting all-rounder but in this tournament I bowled more than I batted.'
Akshar Patel wins the Emerging Player Award.
Pandey: 'Obviously I've got four achievements this year, Ranji, Irani, Vijay Hazare and the cherry on the cake is today's win. This tournament is real fun and I have always done well, I am happy with my effort. I thought if we play aggressively, we will easily get 200 in 20 overs.'
Manish Pandey is the Man of the Match for his 50-ball 94.
Yusuf Pathan: 'It is a very happy moment and I am proud of winning 3 IPL titles. The tension was because of me, I got out at the wrong time, if I had stayed we would have won it before.'
WV Raman: 'It is very exciting. It is not everyday you chase a big total in a final.'
Pat Cummins: 'It was my first Indian T20 League, it is good to get a win. The bowlers performed well.'
