England vs New Zealand, 1st Test, New Zealand tour of England 2013

Commentary

England won by 170 runs | England Vs New Zealand Live Score, 1st Test

That's it from us here today. We hope you enjoyed this good game. The 2nd and last of the Tests begins on friday. Do join us again for that. Cheers and goodbye.
Broad: 'It was really pleasing. It was a nerve-wracking day for me. It could have gone either way. Jimmy has been fantastic throughout this match and getting to 300 wickets is just incredible. I think New Zealand bowled fantastically well throughout. They found out that a fuller length worked well. Tim Southee bowled superbly, running down the hill and moving it away. It was nice to get a few runs. I did not have time to think. We knew we had enough on board to bowl at. It's a very special place to play cricket and it's really good to get back on the honours board. I found some really good rhythm at the start of the season. I just have to keep bowling well. I like bowling here. I like bowling from the Nursery End.'
Stuart Broad is the Man of the Match for his career-best figures of 7/44.
Cook: 'We needed 250-260 on this wicket. The way Broad and Anderson bowled was just outstanding. When Broad gets it totally right, swinging it away in the mid 80s, he's very hard to face. Root had a very good game. His partnership with Trott was very good. Fantastic achievement by Anderson to get 300 wickets. He's a captain's dream. He knows what he's doing and does it well. A 170 run win is a big win in Test. We have to look at things we have to do better as well.'
Brendon McCullum: 'We came in with incredibly high hopes. Stuart Broad was outstanding. There was an element of panic with our batting. We had periods of domination. Incredibly proud of the guys. We have taken a couple of steps forward and a step backwards. Tim Southee was superb. We have another Test in a few days and we have to look to do well there. I'm confident that we'll play ourselves in better than we did today. We have some errors we have to work on. We do have the bowlers to take 20 wickets. We have to sit out and work out as a team, if I have to take up the wicket-keeping. We've fought very hard throughout the game but let ourselves down today.'
It was a pathetic batting display from New Zealand after Southee gave them an outside chance of winning. Stuart Broad was unstoppable either side of the lunch break and his spell just before the break killed all hopes of a New Zealand win. The formality was completed soon after. The scorecard might tell you that England were in a different class but New Zealand ran them well for most part of the game. Broad's game-breaking spell finally won it for the hosts.
