South Africa vs New Zealand, 3rd ODI, New Zealand tour of South Africa 2012-13

Commentary

South Africa won by 1 wkt | South Africa Vs New Zealand Live Score, 3rd ODI

The New Zealand team poses with the trophy. They were the better team in the ODI series and deserve the victory. That brings an end to New Zealand's tour of South Africa. The hosts were the better side in the Tests (by miles) but the visitors were better in the shorter formats. We'll leave you with that. Tata!
Brendon McCullum: 'Incredibly proud. The young team has shown great fighting character, especially after the Test series. To bounce back like this was very satisfying. We are without 4 or 5 of our best players but we have responded well in the ODI series. There's going to be great competition for spots in this team. We were taught a lesson in the Test side, it was a chance to learn. The guys stood up and took their opportunities in the ODI series so it was a massive confidence booster. It was a big series for Kane Williamson. He is a very strong leader within this group. England is going to be a big series for us. We have to use this series win as a spring-board and continue the momentum against England.'
Smith: 'NZ have played superbly this series. It was a good experience for our young middle order. I found a good mental space to perform (without the captaincy repsonsibility). It felt good and it was also a great chance for Faf du Plessis to learn and grow as a leader. We wanted to take it close and if it goes till the end, we always had a chance. To see McLaren bowl well and hit the winning runs was good. He has been in and out of the side and this will help his confidence. The Pakistan series is going to be an exciting series. The Test side has had an incredible year, but it's going to be a big test for us to do well against Pakistan'
Graeme Smith is the Man of the Match
du Plessis: ' It felt like I was getting older. It was thrilling, very glad to see the youngsters perform. McLaren played the shot of the day to clinch the game. We didn't play too well but we'll take a win. Bowling in the death is a problem. We gave away a bit too much. We need a few steady heads in the middle order as well. Smith was there today but we need to learn from this and finish games. Smith is experienced and he knows how to do it. It's a learning opportunity for the youngsters in the team. It has been 3 hard months for us. NZ played better cricket through the series.'
It was a see-saw battle all the way today. 261 wasn't an easy target but South Africa got a very good start. Smith led the chase with a century but wickets kept falling around him. South Africa looked safe until Smith was there but once he went, New Zealand pounced on the opportunity. However, a dramatic finish courtesy Ryan McLaren ensured that South Africa wouldn't 'choke' again.
The crowd has gone crazy. The South African dressing room erupts as well. They might have lost the series but they badly wanted to avoid a whitewash. And they have just about managed to do it. The New Zealand team can be proud of their performance in the limited overs part of the series.
End of over 50, 11 runs (2 1 . . 2 W 6 )

49.6 James Franklin to Ryan McLaren 6
SIX, McLaren you beauty! What a stunning way to end the match! What a brave shot as well. A short of length delivery on the off, McLaren goes on his knees and paddle-whips it over fine leg, he just wanted to clear the man inside the ring but he has timed it superbly and it goes all the way. A brilliant finish to a brilliant game.
Lonwabo Tsotsobe, right handed bat, comes to the crease
Can McLaren help South Africa avoid a whitewash? They had crossed over while the ball was in the air. What an end to this series. So many nervous faces everywhere in the stadium. The NZ camp, the SA dressing room and the crowd.
49.5 James Franklin to Dale Steyn W
out Caught by Grant Elliott!! And a wicket! The crowd is stunned. A length ball on off, Steyn comes down the track and lofts across but mistimes it to deep mid wicket, Elliott runs in to take a neat catch. 3 from 1 ball, and only 1 wicket left. Steyn c Grant Elliott b Franklin 4(6)
3 from 2. Tension, tension.
49.4 James Franklin to Dale Steyn 2
2 runs, a couple now! This was full and outside off, Steyn makes room and slices it to backward point, Williamson dives but only manages a half stop
5 from 3
49.3 James Franklin to Dale Steyn 0
no run, swing and a miss!
