South Africa vs Pakistan, 1st Test, Pakistan tour of South Africa 2013

Commentary

South Africa won by 211 runs | South Africa Vs Pakistan Live Score, 1st Test

That's all we have for you today. Keep following us as cricket continues 24*7 from across the world. For now, bye bye!
Steyn: 'I bowled quite nicely but it was a great team performance. It came out sweetly and to pick up wickets was good. I've not been able to pick up wickets at the top in recent times but glad I did it here. We knew that if we could get through the partnership between Misbah and Shafiq, we could run through them. This morning the guys came out hard and finished the game. Things just clicked for me - the ball was coming out of my hands nicely. When you start thinking about too many things, it could go wrong. I just got the ball in my hand and bowled without thinking too much. The Pakistani dressing room congratulated me, it's always nice to be appreciated by the opponents. I must say that they played well too, especially yesterday. It's not easy to play in these conditions and they did well.'
Dale Steyn is the Man of the Match. Obviously!
Smith: 'Superb way to celebrate the 100th Test as captain. There is always a bit of nervousness around these matches with some milestones but we did well. We knew that we wanted to bat first. We let outselves down a bit in the first innings, we needed 300 but 250 was good enough. Steyn has been a great performer for us, we're lucky to have the number 1 bowler in the world in our side. Morne and Philander supported him well. AB de Villiers has silenced his critics with his keeping. He made a superb century as well, the intensity with which he played was terrific. We have to maintain our performances in the next two Tests as well. It has been an emotional week as well. I need some time to put in perspective the support from the team, family and fans. It has been an amazing week.'
Misbah: 'The first innings hurt us badly. Steyn's first spell made the difference in this Test match. Our bowlers did well to restrict them to 253 in the first innings. If we had at least equalled their score, this would have been a good Test match. We need to see off the new ball, like we did in the second innings. Our main concern is the batting. We have to get starts first and look to score more than 300 runs. South Africa is the number 1 side - they have top class bowlers and batsmen. We can learn a lot from them.'
On the other hand, Pakistan have a lot of things to ponder over. Their famed bowling attack did not let them down in the 1st innings but they had little chance after their batting collapsed on the 2nd morning. Hafeez rarely looked in any sort of nick, Jamshed acquitted himself well in the 2nd dig before throwing his wicket away. Azhar Ali fought hard but did not have the runs to show for it. Misbah and Shafiq fought hard and will take some confidence into Cape Town as they notched up fifties each. Stay tuned for the presentations..
South Africa register a comprehensive victory by a margin of 211 runs and go 1-0 up in the series. Superb effort from Dale Steyn, he ends with career best match figures of 11/60. Pakistan were never in the match after having been bowled out for just 49 in their 1st essay. AB de Villiers completed a great match for himself despite battling a finger injury. A century in the 2nd innings and equalling the world record for most number of catches (11) in a match. Smith's 100th Test as a captain is a victorious one and he will hope to celebrate leading his country for the 100th time by sealing the series at Newlands.
