Presentation Ceremony:
Peterson: 'I am just pleased that we got over the line in a tense situation. We were under pressure but the coaching staff have been hammering me to play with a bit more intent. I am very happy to take the team over the line. We were missing Morne Morkel but someone in this team steps up to the plate and delivers. Ajmal is a real genius and I enjoy watching him bowl. He put us under pressure throughout. It has been a long journey (First MoM) and I would like to thank the crowd at Newlands. The boys will celebrate well as it has been a special match.'
Robin Peterson is the MoM for his all-round skills. He scored 84 and picked up 5/167 in the match.
Graeme Smith: 'It was a tough Test. The conditions suited Pakistan and they looked at home in this match. The bowlers stepped up on day three and four. We would love to have wickets with pace and bounce. Ajmal is a wonderful bowler but I am glad with the way how we fought it out. It is an amazing feeling to win consistently. Peterson's all-round efforts were memorable. We need to keep making the South African fans proud. Philander was outstanding and we were able to create pressure due to him. Morne Morkel has a strained hamstring and he will not play the third Test. I think when we were 5 down in the first innings, we looked to restrict the deficit. Peterson's 84 was the key. It has been a special journey (100th Test as RSA skipper) and I hope that the crowd at Pretoria supports us.'
Misbah-ul-Haq: 'It was an improved performance. Asad Shafiq and Younis Khan batted well. They got us in the game. After taking seven wickets, the Peterson knock took the game away from us. The batting collapse cost us. 250 was a tricky score. The wicket was behaving well. Credit should be given to Peterson for the way he bowled. All the RSA bowlers bowled in the right areas and they did not allow us to score runs. Ajmal has bowled well in the last year and he has set up the games for us. Every Test is important for us and playing against a top-quality side is important. We have to come hard and put up a good show at Centurion.'
South Africa, on the other hand, continue their domination. They have not lost a Test series at home or anywhere else since they lost 2-1 to Australia in 2009. Under Graeme Smith, they continue to develop into a formidable unit. Stay with us for the presentation.
If one has to pin-point the exact causes for Pakistan's loss, it has been the inability of the top order again to handle the new ball. The collapse by the middle order to some seam and swing only compounded their woes. Saeed Ajmal maintained pressure at one end but there was no one else.
In the Pakistan second innings, they collapsed against some metronomic bowling from Vernon Philander. Robin Peterson also chipped in with three wickets as Pakistan collapsed to 169. Saeed Ajmal was once again the star of the show as he followed up his 6/96 with 4/51 to trouble the Proteas.
South Africa have been made to work hard in this Test match. Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq set it up for Pakistan with their wonderful centuries. At 210/7, South Africa were staring down the barrel but Robin Peterson turned the game around with his career best score of 84 to restrict the deficit to just 12.
