Cracking the whip on the BCCI on water controversy, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday ordered that all matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) scheduled to be held in Maharashtra after April 30 be shifted out of the state. From May 1 to 29, around 13 IPL matches — including three in Nagpur, six in Pune and four in Mumbai — were scheduled to be held in the state.

“It will be better off that matches are held outside state. We cannot ignore the plight of the people. State government has to monitor whether what has been assured is being done,” Bombay High Court told the BCCI. The ruling has left the board and the affected franchises in a major quandary, as a lot of rescheduling and logistical re-arrangements need to be done now. Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) had opposed shifting of the matches out of Maharashtra.

BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur had said that the board was ready to use treated sewage water and it had no intention of using potable water during the IPL matches. The Pune franchise too had promised of ensuring that it sends the same quantity of water to drought-affected areas, besides donating INR 5 Crores to the state government towards its drought relief fund. Within minutes of the Bombay HC ruling, the order started trending on Twitter. Here are a few top tweets on the matter:
