Ecuador first appeared in the FIFA World Cup in 2002, when it was co-hosted by South Korea and Japan. They then qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Ecuador missed out in 2010 in South Africa, but have qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. Their home stadium is Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa, which is situated at over 2,700 metres above sea level.
This is seen as a major factor in their qualifications for the FIFA World Cups as opposition teams find it difficult to cope with the altitude. Ecuador are in Group E with Switzerland, Honduras and France. While the French are seen as favourites to top the group, it could be a three-way battle between the other three teams. Ecuador would be hoping to do well in a FIFA World Cup in South America.
