Plunkett plays a needless aerial shot against Herath and is dismissed for a 12-ball duck. That ends a forgettable day for England as Lanka are on the brink of a historic series win.
OUT! L Plunkett c Pradeep b Herath 0(12)
Dhammika Prasad is on a roll here, after getting Robson to be caught in the slips, he gets the wicket of Bell. This was moving in and Bell played for an out going delivery. The stumps are in disarray and England are all but gone. Plunkett was given caught behind as well but he opted for a review and the hot spot showed no edge.
A horror over for England. Two in two for Prasad. Cook got a short and wide delivery, he tried to pull it and chopped it on to his stumps. Ballance gets a peach of delivery. Pitches on the off and bends a touch inwards to beat the bat. Excellent delivery to bowl to a new batsman.
OUT! Cook b Prasad 16(39), G Ballance lbw 0(1)
Rangana Herath is still posing a few questions to the England batsmen. Robson had one more close call when he went for a defensive push and the ball hit his pads. The Lankans appealed but Herath wasn’t interested as it had come off a thick edge.
England have started solidly. With pitch offering no movement, the pacers weren’t a big threat. However, Rangana Herath created problems in his first over. Robson tried to leave a delivery and it almost kissed the bail over off-stump.
England have started off well. Pradeep and Eranga start the bowling from either ends. Hint of movement off the pitch for the bowlers. Robson is off the mark with a off-drive for four. More of a punch which was timed well. Cook is off the mark as well.
Here’s England’s highest successful run chases in test matches. Can they win this test? RT for yes, FAV for no. pic.twitter.com/4AFpxZc6nJ
Huge mistake by Billy, Anderson got this to move away from middle stump and Eranga nicked it to the keeper, Billy turned down the appeal for caught behind. Nothing seems to be going right for England. Lead is 320 runs. Mathews has completed his 150.
Finally a breakthrough for England. Herath is run out thanks to a direct hit from Joe Root. Sri Lanka have accumulated 318-run lead at tea.
OUT! R Herath run out J Root 48(82)
England are being forced in to submission. Mathews and Herath have already shattered a few records. Highest eighth wicket stand for Sri Lanka in England.
Atkinson, Sobers (2), Mushtaq Md, Imran, Vettori and now Mathews – the only Test captains with a 100 & a 4 wkt haul in same Test #EngvSL
England’s frustrations are piling on. Liam Plunkett would’ve had a 10-for if he held on to that sharp return catch from Mathews. It was hit straight back at him and Plunkett somehow fumbles and manages to let that pass through his hands. Herath has hit two fours off Jordan’s over and the fifty partnership comes up between the two.
Welcome back for the post lunch session. Liam Plunkett starts off the proceedings and starts off with a few short balls for Mathews. There was a caught behind appeal but Mathews survives. He moved in to the 80s with a four through point.
Lunch: The match is evenly poised with Sri Lanka leading by 203 runs and England eager to pick up the remaining three wickets. Catch the Lunch Report here
Herath has done well to hang on with Angelo Mathews. Probably an over or two more to go before lunch. Sri Lanka’s lead is now 197.
That’s bizarre but not new. Steve Davies calls off the over after five balls. He failed to exclude the first ball which was wide. He got he message before Anderson started the over and completed Plunkett’s six legal deliveries. Mathews has shifed his gear and is trusting only himself to kncok as many runs as possible.
Two in two for Liam Plunkett. Just about 20 minutes back, Sri Lanka were frustrating England, but the tide has turned and England are looking jubilant. Dinesh Chandimal was going for his shots and this time around he pulls it straight to Gary Ballance in the deep. Low catch, well taken by Ballance. Plunkett strikes once more as new man Dhammika Prasad upper-cuts straight to Joe Root. The lead is 170 runs.
OUT! D Chandimal c Ballance b Plunkett, D Prasad c Root b Plunkett 0(1)
A review wasted by England, that one from Anderson to Chandimal could’ve hit the second set of leg-stump.
Finally a breakthrough for England! James Anderson managed what he didn’t do for most of the duration with the new ball — pitch it up. Jayawardene goes for the drive and edges to Prior behind the stumps.
OUT! M Jayawardene 79(168)
Suddenly winning the toss & fielding first doesn’t seem the smartest of moves, another 100 Sri Lanka in box seat. #EngvSL
Dropped: Jayawardene slashes at a short delivery from Broad and it nearly carried to gully where Ian Bell was stationed. Going by the reactions of the fielders it looked like a missed chance. Meanwhile, the skipper has played one more fine knock. 15th Test fifty for Mathews. The lead is now up to 158.
The lead is past 150 now. England have the new cherry and it’s up to Broand-Anderson pair to get the elusive breakthrough. Anderson has bowled a touch wide with the new ball and Jayawardene has a go at him in Anderson’s second over of the day. He guides one swinging away to thirdman for four and follows it with a cut shot which was well stopped by the fielder. The fifth ball was a touch straighter but unfortunately it swings further down the leg and Mathews tickles it past Prior for four.
“@piersmorgan: If Sri Lanka get 200 ahead, we’re in big trouble. #ENGvSL” Could be 300 at this rate…
England looking desperate to get a wicket. These two are strolling casually with the pacers not getting much movement. Moeen Ali bowls the 80th over of the innings and the first balls is cut away for four. New Ball available for England.
Good start for Sri Lanka. Mathews and Mahela picked 22 from the first four overs of the day. Plunkett and Jordan are bowling in tandem. The most productive over for Lanka was the third of the day with a boundary and a couple each on consecutive balls. Last ball of the 76th over by Jordan was smacked through covers by Jayawardene for four. Lead now is 128 runs.
Welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of Day Four of the second Test between England and Sri Lanka at Headingley, Leeds. As things stand, Sri Lanka are 106 runs ahead and have six wickets in hand. Mahela Jayawardene is in the centre and a lot would depend on him to help Sri Lanka get to a good score. They need to set a good total to give England a challenge in the fourth innings. Having said that, England to have a chance with Sri Lanka four down. They would want to limit the total by picking up some early wickets, that should put Sri Lanka on the backfoot. I am Abhijit Banare and will take you through the day in what promises to be a good contest between bat and ball at Headingley.
