Virat Kohli 22 (33), Ambati Rayudu 2 (2)

Rayudu takes the first ball from Tredwell and drives it down the ground for a single. Kohli is batting and tries to play through mid-wicket, but it is straight to the fielder. He then manages to defend a few. One of them turns in quite sharply and he somehow manages to keep it out. The last ball fetches a single for Kohli.

IND 86/2 | Overs 18

Virat Kohli 21 (28), Ambati Rayudu 1 (1)

OUT! Ajinkya Rahane 45 (56)

Finn comes into Kohli and he puts it through the leg-side for a single. Rahane then hits through the off-side for another single. Finn then bowls short to Rahane but it is too short and is called a wide as it sails over the batsman’s head. But Rahane is gone. Finn is his tormentor. Rahane is routed to the crease and edges it to the wicket-keeper. Ambati Rayudu is the new man.

Well, Rajdeep Sardesai would certainly be disappointed now…

IND 79/1 | Overs 17

Ajinkya Rahane 44 (53), Virat Kohli 17 (26)

Stokes bowls to Kohli and keeps him on strike. Off the fifth ball, Kohli cuts one through the off-side for a single. It was hit very well by Kohli and though it fetched him only a single, it will make him feel good.

IND 78/1 | Overs 16

Ajinkya Rahane 44 (52), Virat Kohli 16 (21)

Finn is back and the first ball climbs on Rahane. He cannot get anything on it as it goes through to the wicketkeeper. Off the second ball, a single is taken. Kohli then plays one off the middle of his bat. Though it did not fetch him runs, it shows he is feeling a lot better. Finn then strays onto Kohli’s pads and he is flicked for a single behind square.

IND 74/1 | Overs 15

Ajinkya Rahane 42 (49), Virat Kohli 14 (18)

Ben Stokes is into the attack and Rahane plays a couple of them solidly off the front foot. And then Stokes overpitches and Rahane lofts it with ease and that has gone all the way for a six. It wasn’t hit with power, but all timing. Boy, isn’t he looking good out there in the middle! And to show a bit of temperance again, he defends the next ball. Rahane then keeps strike with a single off the last ball.

IND 67/1 | Overs 14

Ajinkya Rahane 35 (43), Virat Kohli 14 (18)

Finn continues. Kohli guides the second ball for a single. Rahane then gets one a little full and he plays it on the rise for a four through cover. Though it was hit a bit uppishly, it was safe and goes for a four. Finn then digs it short and Rahane pulls it for a single.

IND 61/1 | Overs 13

Ajinkya Rahane 30 (40), Virat Kohli 13 (15)

Tredwell is in and Kohli charges down the ground and hits it straight for six. What a shot by Kohli! Is this the shot that would break the shackles. He then cuts one behind point for a single.

IND 54/1 | Overs 12

Ajinkya Rahane 30 (39), Virat Kohli 6 (10)

Steven Finn is in, who has tormented Rahane in the past. Rahane cuts one behind point for a couple behind point. He then gets right behind the next ball, which is pitched a lot fuller. Rahane then goes over cover and that has gone for a four. That was very well played by Rahane as it was a little full and he latched on to it perfectly. Rahane then cuts the last ball for a couple of runs.

IND 46/1 | Overs 11

Ajinkya Rahane 22 (33), Virat Kohli 6 (10)

James Tredwell comes on to bowl and Kohli takes a single first ball. Rahane then works the strike over off the third-ball. Early sight of Tredwell in this innings. Kohli then gets an edge off the last ball and they get a couple of runs.

IND 42/1 | Overs 10

Ajinkya Rahane 21 (31), Virat Kohli 3 (6)

Woakes continues and Kohli is right behind the first one. He is on the front-foot to defend it well. And then, he guides one to third-man for a single. Rahane comes back on strike. Rahane then drives down the ground, but Woakes gets the foot to it and takes the pace off it. Would have been another good boundary for Rahane.

IND 41/1 | Overs 9

Ajinkya Rahane 21 (27), Virat Kohli 2 (4)

Anderson is on. He overpitches off the third-ball and Rahane drives it gracefully down the ground and that has gone for a four. That shows Rahane’s class. Played with great confidence. All the other deliveries are blocked and India get only four off that over.

IND 37/1 | Overs 8

Ajinkya Rahane 17 (21), Virat Kohli 2 (4)

OUT! Shikhar Dhawan 16  (23)

That is the Dhawan were were so used to during last year’s Champions Trophy! It was a bit full and Dhawan drives it with great style through long-off for a four. He then gets width and cuts. But, he is gone! Four and out! Woakes celebrates. Kohli is the new man and he defends the first ball well. The second ball is also decently played. He also gets right behind the third-ball. And he gets off the mark by playing one behind square on the leg-side for a couple.

IND 31/0 | Overs 7

Ajinkya Rahane 17 (21), Shikhar Dhawan 12  (21)

Anderson continues and Rahane tries to hit to the off-side, but that yields no run. Anderson then strays down the leg-side and they get a wide. Anderson bowls short later in the over and Rahane pulls behind square and they get a couple of runs before the fine-leg could come around and stop it. Rahane has played well today. He gets an inside edge, but fortunately for Rahane and unfortunately for England, the ball has hit his pad.

IND 28/0 | Overs 6

Ajinkya Rahane 15 (15), Shikhar Dhawan 12  (21)

Woakes is back into the attack and Dhawan takes a single off the second back. Rahane then gets a single through third-man. Dhawan continues to struggle a touch before eventually getting off-strike. And, finally, he smashes one. It was short and wide, but he has been denied a boundary thanks to some great work by the fielder at point.

IND 25/0 | Overs 5

Ajinkya Rahane 14 (14), Shikhar Dhawan 9  (16)

Anderson continues and Rahane takes a single off the third-ball. Dhawan continues to stay on strike. But, he gets a short-ball and they get a single off the last ball.

IND 22/0 | Overs 4

Ajinkya Rahane 13 (11), Shikhar Dhawan 8 (13)

Woakes continues to Dhawan and keeps him quiet. He is kept on strike through the over. It is a maiden. A good one from Chris Woakes.

IND 22/0 | Overs 3

Ajinkya Rahane 13 (11), Shikhar Dhawan 8 (7)

Dhawan lofts the first ball over mid-on and they get a couple for that. He then works one through the leg-side and gets a single. Rahane comes on strike. Anderson then pitches it short and Rahane pulls it for a four over mid-wicket. The next ball is full, almost to over-compensate and Rahane drives it well through extra-cover for another four.

IND 11/0 | Overs 2

Ajinkya Rahane 5 (7), Shikhar Dhawan 5 (5)

Chris Woakes starts off and he gets one to climb and leave Dhawan. The batsman was playing tentatively at it. He then gets one ball that is short and Dhawan cuts it. The fielder in the ring got a hand to it and that took the pace off it. Rahane gets off the mark as Woakes strays on the pads and is full. He is worked through fine-leg for a four. Off the last ball, Dhawan gets an edge and it flies to third-man and they get a single.

IND 2/0 | Over 1

Ajinkya Rahane 0 (5), Shikhar Dhawan 1 (1)

Ajinkya Rahane takes the first ball from James Anderson. He leaves the first ball as it leaves him outside the off-stump. India get their first runs as the ball hits his pads and they get a leg-bye to fine-leg. Dhawan gets off the mark by placing one through the off-side.

ENG 227 all out | Overs 50

James Anderson 0 (0)

OUT! James Tredwell 30 (18) Steven Finn 6 (8)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bowl the last over of the  innings. Tredwell gets a boundary off the first ball as he makes room and plays it behind point for a four. That was very well played by Tredwell. And guess what! The next ball was in the slot and Tredwell smashes it for a six down the ground. And, it was a no-ball as Bhuvneshwar over-stepped. Free hit to come! Tredwell walks across to scoop it but can only get a single to square-leg. Finn hits one down the ground and can only get a single. It goes on the bounce to Shikhar Dhawan at long-on. Tredwell is playing a bit of a gem here1 He makes room again and digs it out to play it behind point for a four. And Bhuvneshwar gets his man! He tries to hit it in the air, but hit it high. Bhuvneshwar takes the catch himself. Finn hits it to the mid-wicket region. They go for a single and try for the second. Dhoni takes the bails, but has Finn made it? It is tight. But, the bat seems to be on the line. He is out. England bowled out for 227. Do join us in about 40 minutes for the India innings.

ENG 209/8 | Overs 49

James Tredwell 15 (13), Steven Finn 4 (6)

Shami is back. Finn hits the first one down the ground and they get a single. Tredwell walks across to the leg-side again and they get a single for that as well. After a dot ball, Shami bowls short and Finn pulls to the deep for a single. Shami then bowls the yorker and Tredwell can only dig it out for a single.

Finn gets off the mark first ball as Ashwin fumbles in his follow through. Tredwell moves across again, but it turns away from him.

ENG 198/7 | Overs 47

Jos Buttler 38 (56), James Tredwell 12 (9)

Shami will continue and Tredwell is trying to move across his stumps and perhaps unsettle his rhythm a bit. He manages to top-edge it, but it goes above Dhoni’s head. The batsmen get two before the third-man comes around and stops it. Buttler tries to smash it down the ground but Shami gets a boot to it to stop it. It could have been a certain four. Tredwell then makes room and cuts it over the off-side for a four. Good shot by Tredwell. Tredwell then moves again and pulls it over mid-wicket for a four.

ENG 186/7 | Overs 46

Jos Buttler 37 (55), James Tredwell 1 (4)

Ravindra Jadeja is in from the other end. Tredwell was hit on the pads off the second ball, but it was hit outside the off-stump. Thus, he is given not out by Paul Reiffel.

ENG 182/7 | Overs 45

Jos Buttler 35 (53),

OUT! Chris Woakes 15 (27)

Shami is back and he bowls one just outside the off-stump that goes to Dhoni at a very good pace. Woakes plays the second one to mid-off and goes through for a quick single. Buttler tries to walk across his stumps and scoop it over fine-leg, but misses. Buttler tries to do the same thing again. Buttler then hits to mid-off and gets a single. Shami gets his man! Woakes pulls a short ball and it is straight to the deep square-leg fielder. Mohit Sharma makes no mistake. England slide further.

ENG 180/6 | Overs 44

Jos Buttler 34 (50), Chris Woakes 14 (24)

A boundary at last! Raina bowls and Buttler unleashes the reverse sweep. It goes quite square for a four. That should help him feel a lot better here. He then intelligently works the strike over to Woakes.

ENG 173/6 | Overs 43

Jos Buttler 29 (48), Chris Woakes 12 (20)

Jadeja to bowl his ninth over. Buttler plays the first one through the off-side and gets a single. Woakes then hits one down the ground for another single. Buttler then gets a single through the leg-side as well. Finally a digit other than the binary! Woakes plays through mid-wicket and sprints for a couple. He then plays one down the ground for a single.

ENG 167/6 | Overs 42

Jos Buttler 27 (45), Chris Woakes 8 (17)

Raina is brought back into the attack and he is trying to bowl from over the wicket. England managed to get a couple off runs off the first two balls. But then, Raina managed to put in a few dots. Buttler then works one to the deep on the leg-side and get the third run off the over.

ENG 164/6 | Overs 41

Jos Buttler 25 (40), Chris Woakes 7 (16)

Ravindra Jadeja is in as we move into the last 10 overs. England can do nothing more than play the ball around and hope for the runs to come later. India have managed to exert some pressure here. They have not managed to score runs at a good rate.

ENG 161/6 | Overs 40

Jos Buttler 23 (38), Chris Woakes 6 (12)

Ashwin is in and will bowl from round the wicket. They knock the first three balls around for singles. Woakes then plays one to mid-wicket and there is no run.

ENG 158/6 | Overs 39

Jos Buttler 21 (36), Chris Woakes 5 (8)

Jadeja is into the attack and Dhoni brings in two slips when Chris Woakes comes on. Buttler takes a single off the second ball. Woakes tries to play through the leg-side, but the leading edge takes it to the off-side. Only three runs have come off that over. Buttler has to play this smart and time his innings well.

ENG 155/6 | Overs 38

Jos Buttler 19 (33), Chris Woakes 4 (5)

Ashwin will continue from round the wicket. Woakes drives through the off-side and it was well fielder in the off-side. That has been the mark for India. Buttler is kept quiet by Ashwin and he only manages to get the single off the last ball. Two runs off that over as India continue to build the pressure.

ENG 153/6 | Overs 37

Jos Buttler 18 (28), Chris Woakes 3 (4)

Ravindra Jadeja will try to add to the pressure here. he bowls around the tight channels around the middle-stump, not allowing the batsmen the width to play their shots. India will now try to wrap this up pretty quickly so that they can go on and chase this down quite easily.

ENG 150/6 | Overs 36

Jos Buttler 17 (25), Chris Woakes 1 (1)

OUT! Ben Stokes 2 (7)

Ashwin is brought back into the attack. Stokes is gone! Ashwin keeps him on strike and then squares him up with one that spun away. England have now got 150 on the board.

ENG 149/5 | Overs 35

Jos Buttler 17 (24), Ben Stokes 2 (3)

Mohammed Shami has been taken off after that solitary over. Buttler smashes the first ball from Bhuvneshwar Kumar through the off-side and Ambati Rayudu does well to keep it in. They get three for that. Ben Stokes takes strike and guides one through third-man. Raina could have stopped it, running across from first-slip and misses. Stokes gets off the mark.

ENG 143/5 | Overs 34

Jos Buttler 14 (21), Ben Stokes 0 (0)

OUT! Ian Bell 28 (38)

Suresh Raina comes in and Bell drives it down the ground. They take a single and they go for the second! It looked quite easy. But, Mohit throws it from the deep and it is a direct hit. Bell is way short of his crease. What an inspiring moment for India! Buttler smashes a four off the next ball and that was played very well. But, India are in control here. A lot rests on Buttler here. Ben Stokes, the new man has to give him good support.

ENG 137/4 | Overs 33

Ian Bell 28 (38), Jos Buttler 8 (15)

Mohit is back on the field and was given the ball. But then, Dhoni summons Shami to bowl. It is quite interesting that Dhoni is getting the seamers now.

Gautam Bhimani has an interesting theory:

Ian Bell 28 (35), Jos Buttler 5 (12)

ENG 127/4 | Overs 30

Ian Bell 24 (29), Jos Buttler 3 (6)

Ashwin continues. Bell now has to bat well and take this innings through. Ashwin continues from round the wicket and could have had Buttler. The ball hit his pads as he tried to go on the backfoot. However, it was too high. Only four runs have come off this over. India are going along very well here. Good job by the spinners.

ENG 123/4 | Overs 29

Ian Bell 22 (26), Jos Buttler 1 (3)

Ravindra Jadeja continues and Buttler is the new man. He does get off the mark.

Ian Bell 20 (23),

ENG 117/3 | Overs 27

Ian Bell 18 (19), Eoin Morgan 9 (16)

The batsmen are only knocking it around as Raina continues. Only three runs come off that over.

Raina continues and Morgan tries to get it past slip, but is well saved by Ajinkya Rahane. After a few dot balls, Morgan gets it through to the deep and they get a single. Bell then works one to the leg-side for a single, which brings up England’s 100.

ENG 98/3 | Overs 23

Ian Bell 7 (9), Eoin Morgan 1 (2)

OUT! Joe Root 2 (7)

Jadeja is brought into the attack. He turns one away from Root and Dhoni takes the bails off. There is a loud appeal. Replays show that Root’s backfoot is on the line and he may have to go. Eoin Morgan is the new man. He gets off the mark off the second ball.

ENG 96/2 | Overs 22

Ian Bell 6 (6), Joe Root 2 (6)

Raina turns one and Root is caught on the crease. There is an appeal for a leg-before, but it is turned down. Root then tries to play off the front-foot and almost lobs one back to the bowler. After playing three dots, Root plays one down the ground for a single. Only two runs off the over.

ENG 94/2 | Overs 22

Ian Bell 5 (5), Joe Root 1 (1)

OUT! Alastair Cook 44 (64)

Ambati Rayudu bowls one just outside the off-stump and Cook late cuts it. Rayudu appeals and he was alone in doing so. It had flicked the front pad before Cook played that stroke. Later the batsmen knock it around again for a few runs. And Rayudu gets his man! Rayudu has an ODI wicket! Cook stepped out and it is angled down the leg-side and misses. Dhoni does the rest! India celebrate. Root is the new man and he gets off the mark with a single through the leg-side.

ENG 90/1 | Overs 20

Alastair Cook 43 (61), Ian Bell 4 (4)

Suresh Raina continues. The batsmen just knock it around the ground for a few singles. Four runs have come off this over as well. India are now trying to keep England in check here.

ENG 86/1 | Overs 19

Alastair Cook 41 (56), Ian Bell 2 (2)

Ambati Rayudu comes in to bowl. Cook works the first ball through the leg-side for a single. Bell gets of the mark by driving one down the ground. A few singles come off this over as England try to recover after the loss of Hales in the last over.

ENG 82/1 | Overs 18

Alastair Cook 39 (53),

OUT! Alex Hales 42 (55)

Suresh Raina comes into the attack and Cook gets a single first ball. Hales then plays one to short third-man and gets a single. Raina then bowls short and Cook pulls him over mid-wicket for a four. Hales is out! He tries to sweep the last ball and gets the top edge as Dhoni takes the catch behind the wicket. Hales goes after a promising start to his innings.

ENG 75/0 | Overs 17

Alastair Cook 33 (50), Alex Hales 41 (52)

Cook gets a single off the first ball as Shami continues. Hales charges down the ground and tries to go over the top and misses. There is an appeal later for a single, but it is not out as there is an inside edge.

ENG 74/0 | Overs 16

Alastair Cook 32 (49), Alex Hales 41 (47)

Ashwin continues and only two runs are possible in this over.

ENG 72/0 | Overs 15

Alastair Cook 31 (48), Alex Hales 40 (42)

Shami continues and Hales takes a single off the second ball. Cook does take a single later after a couple of balls. Only three runs off this over as Hales works one off the middle-stump to the deep for a single.

ENG 69/0 | Overs 14

Alastair Cook 30 (45), Alex Hales 38 (39)

Ashwin continues and strays on Hales’ pads. The ball takes his glove and goes for a four. Bhuvneshwar Kumar dived but could not stop it at short fine-leg. Ashwin continues to bowl from round the wicket, trying to cramp Hales for room. He manages to get off strike with a single. Cook then sweeps one to the deep and the batsmen get a single.

ENG 61/0 | Overs 13

Alastair Cook 29 (43), Alex Hales 32 (35)

Shami starts off at this end. Hales gets a single to get off strike off the third ball. In the last over, we saw the physio take a limping Mohit out of the field. So, India may be without one bowler and it could have some implications for them. But, their 40 overs are taken care off with the others and then one of the part-timers to bowl.

ENG 59/0 | Overs 12

Alastair Cook 27 (40), Alex Hales 31 (32)

Ravichandran Ashwin comes in to bowl. The batsmen knock it around for a couple of singles early on. Hales then charges down the ground and chips it over mid-off for a four. He merely timed it over the top and that has gone for a four. Ashwin comes from round the wicket and beats Hales with the turn. Dhoni takes the bails off. Hales had taken his foot off the ground, but has perhaps got it down in time.

ENG 52/0 | Overs 11

Alastair Cook 26 (39), Alex Hales 25 (27)

Bhuvneshwar continues to bowl an extended spell. The openers have put up their fifty-run stand with a quick single through the off-side. They have batted well after a slow start. Cook then drives through the off-side and they get a couple of runs.

ENG 48/0 | Overs 10

Alastair Cook 23 (34), Alex Hales 24 (26)

Mohit Sharma has gone off the field as he has hurt his foot. Sanju Samson has come on the field. Cook gets a short one and he nearly pulls one for a six. It goes one bounce into the boundary.

ENG 43/0 | Overs 9

Alastair Cook 18 (31), Alex Hales 24 (23)

Bhuvneshwar continues and they get a single first up. Cook drives well down the ground, but Bhuvneshwar gets a boot to stop it. The fifth ball is edged by Cook and it goes for a single. Hales gets a couple off the last ball.

ENG 39/0 | Overs 8

Alastair Cook 17 (27), Alex Hales 21 (21)

Mohammed Shami is the new bowler and he surprises Hales with a ball that hits him on the thighs. The second ball is overpitched and is driven beautifully down the ground for a four. He punched it very well and that has gone all the way for a four. Shami comes back well but the last ball is angled into the pads and Hales gets three through the leg-side.

ENG 32/0 | Overs 7

Alastair Cook 17 (27), Alex Hales 14 (15)

Cook takes a single. Hales drives the second ball on a length and gets three. Cook edges through the slips and it is a four. That gets Cook his 3000 ODI runs. India did not have the second slip in place and that has gone for a four.

ENG 24/0 | Overs 6

Alastair Cook 12 (22), Alex Hales 11 (14)

The sun comes out at Trent Bridge. While Mohit tries to bowl outside the off-stump, he misses it and Cook gets to pull it over mid-wicket for a four. He then comes back very well by pitching it further up and it moves across him. Mohit pitches it up again and Cook drives down the ground, but Kohli dives at mid-off to stop it well. Very well done by Kohli! Hales comes on strike and then drives on the up through the off-side for a four. That was beautifully played. Action replay! Same ball, same shot to finish the over! England feeling a lot better. Hales gets into his zone.

ENG 11/0 | Overs 5

Alastair Cook 7 (18), Alex Hales 3 (12)

Bhuvneshwar continues and Hales pushes the first one to third-man for a single. Cook tries to do the same off the next ball, but they did not get a run there.

ENG 9/0 | Overs 4

Alastair Cook 6 (17), Alex Hales 2 (8)

Hales gets off the mark as he places one to mid-on and is almost run-out. Only three runs possible in this over. Slow start as the bowlers are getting some movement.

ENG 6/0 | Overs 3

Alastair Cook 5 (13), Alex Hales 0 (5)

Cook walks across the stumps and picks Bhuvneshwar off his pads and plays him behind square for a couple. He tries the same thing again and he gets the leading edge that just eludes Bhuvneshwar.

ENG 4/0 | Overs 2

Alastair Cook 3 (7), Alex Hales 0 (5)

Mohit Sharma starts off from the other end. He moves the first ball away from Cook. Mohit had bowled very well to the England captain in the last game and he continues to bowl that probing line outside the off-stump. Cook then pulls one to fine-leg to get off strike. Hales leaves a delivery that shaves past the off-stump.

ENG 3/0 | Over 1

Alastair Cook 2 (3), Alex Hales 0 (3)

Alastair Cook starts off with a single off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The second ball from Bhuvneshwar is a bit short and Hales tried to pull it. It hit the thigh pad and lobbed in the air. There was an appeal as Dhoni took it, but it was not out. Cook later gets back on strike and ends the over with a couple of runs.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live blog of the third One-Day International (ODI) between India and England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Saturday. This is Nishad Pai Vaidya, and I will be bringing you over-by-over updates of the match. India won the second ODI of the five-match series with a huge margin of 133 runs (via Duckworth-Lewis method) at Cardiff after the first game at Bristol was washed out. Read PREVIEW of India vs England 3rd ODI here.

In the second ODI, India were rescued by Suresh Raina who slammed a brilliant century to help his side post a total in excess of 300, and Ravindra Jadeja’s four-wicket burst helped Indi seal a huge win. India bowled out England for a modest total of 161 in 38.1 overs. England handed their ODI cap to the young Alex Hales, who was the top-scorer in the chase getting 40 runs off 63 balls. Apart from Hales, no other batsman could make a mark. Click here to find out India’s likely XI

England haven’t had much success and have thus been criticised in ODIs of late and this has been an issue where the team needs to put in a lot of effort. Former captain Michael Vaughan and Graeme Swann have appealed for Alastair Cook’s removal from the post of captain, and there are off-field matters which still continue to bother the English skipper. Cook will aim to put behind all this with a good show at Nottingham. Click here to find out England’s likely XI.

Squads:

England: Alastair Cook (c), Alex Hales, Joe Root, Moeen Ali, Gary Ballance, Eoin Morgan, Ian Bell, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, James Anderson, Steven Finn, Harry Gurney, James Tredwell, Jos Buttler (wk).

India: MS Dhoni (c & wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Sanju Samson (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Karn Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Dhawal Kulkarni, Umesh Yadav, Mohit Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Stuart Binny.
