England will be pleased with their efforts on Day 1, as they bowled out India for a paltry total and knocked off almost half of that in about 19 overs. Pathetic show from India from the first over itself, wherein they lost Gautam Gambhir. Indian captain MS Dhoni waged a lone battle, but it was not enough for his side. Read Nishad Pai Vaidya’s final report of the day here.

England 62/0 | Overs 19 | A Cook 24 (49), S Robson 33 (65)

England are riding on their luck as another inside edge off Robson’s bat races down for a four. India are looking clueless, in desperate need of a wicket. England have batted fluently so far in this innings. End of the day, another one which marks complete English domination.

England 58/0 | Overs 18 | A Cook 24 (49), S Robson 29 (59)

More frustration for India as an outside edge off Cook’s bat flies wide of the slip fielders and races away for a four off Binny. India are in trouble with England openers putting up a very strong star. England trail by another 90 runs.

England 54/0 | Overs 17 | A Cook 20 (43), S Robson 29 (59)

Varun Aaron continues as there is a loud appeal for caught behind against Robson. Australian umpire Paul Reiffel was not interested even though replays suggested there was a strong deflection as the ball went past Robson’s waist.

England 51/0 | Overs 16 | A Cook 19 (42), S Robson 27 (54)

England bring up their 50 as Cook collects two runs off Stuart Binny. India would be aiming to give quite a few overs to their fourth bowler with the new ball. Meanwhile, TV replays suggest that Chris Jordan might have actually dropped Ajinkya Rahane’s catch earlier in the day.

England 48/0 | Overs 15 | A Cook 16 (36), S Robson 27 (54)

England have made a positive start to their first innings.  There were questions surrounding Sam Robson but the opener has done well to reach 27 not out with four boundaries. Seven runs added Varun Aaron’s final over.

England 41/0 | Overs 14 | A Cook 13 (34), S Robson 23 (50)

Robson gets a thick edge that flies near to the slips while he was trying to hit on the leg side. The English opener is safe. Two runs added off Ishant Sharma.

England 39/0 | Overs 13 | A Cook 13 (34), S Robson 21 (44)

Robson continues to score freely as he cracks another four off the first ball from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. England are on a roll at the moment, they add nine more runs to the total.

England 30/0 | Overs 12 | A Cook 13 (33), S Robson 16 (39)

Sam Robson gets a thick outside edge that flies for a boundary. Perhaps the fourth slip was needed at that place. England add six more runs to their total.

England 24/0 | Overs 11 | A Cook 12 (29), S Robson 11 (37)

Sam Robson punches down the ground as he gets his first boundary. It’s been a positive start by England so far, India desperately looking for the first breakthrough.

England 20/0 | Overs 10 | A Cook 7 (29), S Robson 7 (31)

Ishant Sharma keeps it tight and Alastair Cook does well to negotiate the probing over.

England 20/0 | Overs 9 | A Cook 7 (23), S Robson 7 (31)

Alastair Cook gets a four off the first ball as it was going down the leg side, and collects couple of more runs in the over to collect from the over. England trail by 128 more runs with all 10 wickets intact.

England 12/0 | Overs 8 | A Cook 5 (19), S Robson 7 (29)

Maiden over by Ishant Sharma as India continue to search for the first breakthrough. England openers have not given them any opportunity so far.

England 12/0 | Overs 7 | A Cook 5 (19), S Robson 7 (23)

Alastair Cook gets two runs off Bhuvneshwar Kumar as England continue to mark a positive start.

England 10/0 | Overs 6 | A Cook 3 (13), S Robson 7 (23)

Ishant Sharma’s third over gets two runs to England as Robson gets an inside edge off the fourth ball.

England 8/0 | Overs 5 | A Cook 3 (13), S Robson 5 (17)

Sam Robson pushes one down the ground as England add three runs off the final ball of Bhuvneshwar’s over. There was an appeal for leg-before against Cook, but the umpire was not interested. Replays suggested it was hitting the top of the wickets.

England 4/0 | Overs 4 | A Cook 2 (8), S Robson 2 (16)

Ishant sprays one down the leg and Alastair Cook flicks it for one. England are cautious early on.

England 3/0 | Overs 3 | A Cook 2 (6), S Robson 1 (12)

Sam Robson survives a probing over by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The England opener has not had greatest of time in this series.

England 3/0 | Overs 2 | A Cook 2 (6), S Robson 1 (6)

Ishant Sharma faces some trouble with the crease — specifically where his front foot landed , and some repair work is done after the bowler complains to his captain. One run scored off the Indian pace spearhead.

England 2/0 | Overs 1 | A Cook 1 (4), S Robson 1 (2)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar gets the new ball and also some movement early on with it. England add two runs via singles.

Pathetic show by India barring MS Dhoni, who shut his critics with his fourth half-century in this series. Dhoni’s knock not only provides India some much-needed boost but also some runs to defend, because at one stage it did not look like they will score even 100. Stay tuned for England’s reply.

India 148 | Overs 61.1 | I Sharma 7 (42), OUT! MS Dhoni c Woakes b Broad 82 (140)

Oh dear! Dhoni pulls but is caught at third man. Stuart Broad claps for the Indian captain. It’s been a fighting knock by Dhoni, but the Indians are in trouble still. Dhoni and Ishant added 58 runs for the last wicket.

India 148/9 | Overs 61 | MS Dhoni 82 (139), I Sharma 7 (42)

Dhoni’s smart work gets a four down the leg side, which brings up the half-century stand between these two. Another four for the Indian captain as he punishes Anderson for being a little wayward. Nine runs added in that over.

India 139/9 | Overs 60 | MS Dhoni 74 (133), I Sharma 7 (42)

Ishant hits towards the leg side to collect two runs off the final ball from Stuart Broad. The partnership between Dhoni and Ishant is of 49 runs now.

India 137/9 | Overs 59 | MS Dhoni 74 (133), I Sharma 5 (36)

Dhoni continues to score freely as he smashes one down the ground for four off James Anderson to move into the 70s. It’s been a top-class knock by the Indian skipper so far.

India 131/9 | Overs 58 | MS Dhoni 69 (130), I Sharma 4 (33)

Ishant Sharma collects two runs off Stuart Broad’s second last ball in the over. India are inching close to 150. It’s a surprise because at one stage they were struggling to go past 100.

India 129/9 | Overs 57 | MS Dhoni 69 (130), I Sharma 2 (27)

Play has resumed in the final session with India looking to add as many runs as they can and frustrate England. Anderson’s first over post tea gets India four runs as Dhoni gets a boundary with a thickish edge.

MS Dhoni is waging a lone battle at The Oval with his fighting 65 not out. He has added 35 runs so far with Ishant Sharma. Comparatively better session for India, they lost only four wickets but added 82 runs. In the first they had lost as many as five top-order batsmen for just 43 runs. Read Nishad Pai Vaidya’s tea report here

India 125/9 | Overs 56 | MS Dhoni 65 (124), I Sharma 2 (27)

Dhoni collects a single off Moeen Ali’s final ball as India take tea on the first day. They lost as many as four wickets in this session, one less than the last session, and added about 82 runs. Bulk of them scored by Dhoni.

India 124/9 | Overs 55 | MS Dhoni 64 (118), I Sharma 2 (27)

Ishant and  Dhoni have put up quite a solid stand here. Ishant safely negotiates Anderson for a maiden as Cook continues to attack with his best bowler.

India 124/9 | Overs 54 | MS Dhoni 64 (118), I Sharma 2 (21)

Typical one-day cricket shot as MS Dhoni lofts one above the cover fielders to hit the first six of the innings. What a knock this is turning out to be! Chris Jordan has not got couple of deliveries right and has been punished for that.

India 118/9 | Overs 53 | MS Dhoni 58 (112), I Sharma 2 (21)

MS Dhoni slams Anderson down the ground as Cook deploys his best bowler to remove the last wicket. India add five runs in that over.

India 113/9 | Overs 52 | MS Dhoni 53 (107), I Sharma 2 (20)

MS Dhoni and Ishant Sharma have added 23 crucial runs to take India past 100. Maiden over from Chris Jordan.

India 113/9 | Overs 51 | MS Dhoni 53 (107), I Sharma 2 (14)

Dhoni smashes another four, over the fielder at mid-off and then gets another four on the last ball to bring up his half-century — the fourth in this series.

India 103/9 | Overs 50 | MS Dhoni 43 (101), I Sharma 2 (14)

Loud appeal by Chris Jordan and company for a leg-before on the final ball of the over but Kumar Dharamsena was not interested. Dhoni collects three runs from the leg side on the previous delivery.

India 100/9 | Overs 49 | MS Dhoni 40 (96), I Sharma 1 (13)

Ishant Sharma does well to survive a probing over by Chris Woakes. It’s a maiden.

India 100/9 | Overs 48 | MS Dhoni 40 (96), I Sharma 1 (7)

Dropped! Ishant Sharma leaves a delivery off Jordan that takes an edge and flies to the second slip, where Ian Bell spills it. 100 up for India as Dhoni slashes one outside the off-stump hard and it flies away for  a four.

India 95/9 | Overs 47 | MS Dhoni 36 (94), I Sharma 1 (3)

Ishant Sharma takes a risky single as he would have been back in the pavilion if Stuart Broad had a direct hit. One run added in Woakes’s over.

India 94/9 | Overs 46 | MS Dhoni 36 (90), I Sharma 0 (1)

MS Dhoni gets another four through backward point off Chris Jordan as India inch closer to three-figure mark in the first innings. It’s been a poor show with the bat.

India 90/9 | Overs 45 | MS Dhoni 32 (84), I Sharma 0 (1)

Ishant Sharma successfully negotiates with the final ball of the over. Will India go past 100 in this innings?

India 90/9 | Overs 44.5 | MS Dhoni 32 (84), OUT!  V Aaron c&b Woakes 1 (17)

Chris Woakes bags his third wicket in the game as Varun Aaron is dismissed. The bowler takes a simple catch. India are nine down.

India 90/8 | Overs 44 | MS Dhoni 32 (84), V Aaron 1 (12)

Varun Aaron gets off the mark finally with a single off Jordan through the covers. On the second ball MS Dhoni collects two runs. The Indian captain hits a four on a lose ball. India add nine runs to total.

India 83/8 | Overs 43 | MS Dhoni 26 (79), V Aaron 0 (11)

MS Dhoni bats out a maiden off Chris Woakes. Gets hit on the fifth ball of the over and goes for his shot on the last, but with no success.

India 83/8 | Overs 42 | MS Dhoni 26 (73), V Aaron 0 (11)

Varun Aaron manages to survive another over as he is beaten on couple of occasions by Chris Jordan, who looks totally pumped up.

India 83/8 | Overs 41 | MS Dhoni 26 (73), V Aaron 0 (5)

Dhoni smashes a boundary through the point region as Woakes gifts him a wide delivery. The captain is waging a lone battle here with no support from the other end whatsoever.

India 79/8 | Overs 40 | MS Dhoni 22 (67), V Aaron 0 (5)

Jordan smashes Varun Aaron with a bouncer on the last ball as he completes another maiden over.

India 79/8 | Overs 39.1 | MS Dhoni 22 (67), OUT! B Kumar c Buttler b Jordan 5 (11)

Another one bites the dust! Bhuvneshwar chases one wide on the off-stump and gets an edge. Buttler takes a good catch while Chris Jordan bags his third wicket. Will India make 100 in this innings?

India 79/7 | Overs 39 | MS Dhoni 22 (67), B Kumar 5 (10)

MS Dhoni cracks a boundary — his fourth — as he goes into the 20s now. Top-scorer for India in this innings so far. India add six runs off Woakes’s over.

India 73/7 | Overs 38 | MS Dhoni 17 (64), B Kumar 4 (7)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar hits over the fielders at slip off Stuart Broad. It was a nicely executed upper-cut as the bowler had given him some width.

India 68/7 | Overs 37 | MS Dhoni 17 (63), B Kumar 0 (2)

Lot of hopes pinned on MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar right now. India are in total disarray, with their batsmen showing no fight at all.

India 68/7 | Overs 36.4 | MS Dhoni 17 (63), OUT! R Ashwin c Root b Woakes 13 (17)

There goes another! R Ashwin is caught at gully by Joe Root, who takes a splendid low catch off Chris Woakes. Will India go past 100 in this innings? Chances look bleak!

India 68/6 | Overs 35 | MS Dhoni 17 (63), R Ashwin 13 (13)

India take three more runs through the covers off Broad as they look to bat positively after losing so many wickets. Dhoni and Ashwin have added 24 runs in about six overs.

India 68/6 | Overs 36 | MS Dhoni 17 (61), R Ashwin 10 (9)

Ashwin collects three more runs through the mid-on region as Broad makes a long chase and prevents a certain boundary. India add four more runs to their total.

India 61/6 | Overs 34 | MS Dhoni 16 (57), R Ashwin 7 (7)

Broad comes from the other end and creates some sort of troubles for Dhoni. India might be looking to score some quick runs and get past 100 before they are blown away.

India 60/6 | Overs 33 | MS Dhoni 15 (53), R Ashwin 7 (5)

R Ashwin collects three runs off Anderson with a push towards the covers. India add four more runs to their total.

India 56/6 | Overs 32 | MS Dhoni 14 (49), R Ashwin 4 (3)

India go past the 50-run mark in the 32nd over of the game with as many as six batsmen back in the pavilion. Dhoni leans forward to play a stroke through the covers, and gets a four off Broad. There haven’t been many of these strokes today. Dhoni gets another four on the penultimate ball, extremely, extremely crucial runs for India these are.

India 48/6 | Overs 31 | MS Dhoni 6 (43), R Ashwin 4 (3)

Finally, a boundary after a very long time as Ravichandran Ashwin gets an inside edge off an unplayable delivery off James Anderson. England continue to dominate India.

India 44/6 | Overs 30.3 | MS Dhoni 6 (43), OUT! S Binny c Cook b Anderson 5 (30)

There it is! Sixth batsman down as James Anderson sends down a terrific delivery to which Stuart Binny had no answer. Alastair Cook takes yet another sharp catch.

India 44/5 | Overs 30 | MS Dhoni 6 (43), S Binny 5 (27)

MS Dhoni bats out another Stuart Broad over, however he is beaten outside the off-stump on couple of occasions. India have scored just one run in last five overs.

India 44/5 | Overs 29 | MS Dhoni 6 (37), S Binny 5 (27)

Another maiden over from James Anderson. India have batted for 29 overs, yet not past the 50-run mark. Only two boundaries have been scored since morning.

India 44/5 | Overs 28 | MS Dhoni 6 (37), S Binny 5 (21)

Broad continues as Binny manages to steal a single on the leg side. India need to be cautious here, not lose too many wickets.

India 43/5 | Overs 27 | MS Dhoni 6 (35), S Binny 4 (17)

James Anderson is on from the other end and he too starts the second session with a maiden. Good thinking by England captain Alastair Cook to start with his two main strike bowlers.

India 43/5 | Overs 26 | MS Dhoni 6 (29), S Binny 4 (17)

Stuart Broad begins the proceedings for England in the second session and sends down a maiden over. There was a bit of delay at the start as it was drizzling. All fine now.

It’s been a pathetic show by India by all means. No fight at all by the batsmen and England have seized control of the game right in the first session. Click here to read Nishad Pai Vaidya’s report of the first session.

India 43/5 | Overs 25 | MS Dhoni 6 (29), S Binny 4 (11)

Absolutely poor show by India in the first session as they take lunch with five batsmen already back in the hut. How much will India put up in the first innings only time will tell, but this has been a dejecting show by the tourists.

India 43/5 | Overs 24 | MS Dhoni 6 (23), S Binny 4 (11)

First time in the morning India’s wrecker-in-chief is seen in action. Moeen Ali chases down one push towards the cover region as Binny collected three runs off Jordan. Four runs added in that over.

India 39/5 | Overs 23 | MS Dhoni 5 (22), S Binny 1 (6)

Chris Woakes does well to send down a maiden over. India really struggling at the moment, only two boundaries scored off since morning.

India 39/5 | Overs 22 | MS Dhoni 5 (16), S Binny 1 (6)

Dhoni collects a single off Chris Jordan as India add another run. The ball not creating too many issues for the batsmen but the damage has already been made.

India 38/5 | Overs 21 | MS Dhoni 5 (14), S Binny 1 (2)

Dhoni and Binny add two more runs to the team total off Chris Woakes.

India 36/5 | Overs 20 | MS Dhoni 4 (9), S Binny 0 (1)

Maiden over from Chris Jordan as Dhoni is cautious not to give England any more scope to capitalise. Dhoni has scored couple of half-centuries in this series, but how many can he score to help his side get to a decent total? Moreover, does he have enough reliable partners left at the other end?

India 36/5 | Overs 19 | MS Dhoni 4 (3), S Binny 0 (1) OUT! M Vijay c Root b Woakes 18 (64)

ANOTHER WICKET! And this time it is Murali Vijay who is back in the pavilion. England are all over India as Vijay is out and not much of batting left in the Indian camp now. An outside edge taken nicely by Joe Root. This is shambolic!

India 36/4 | Overs 18 | M Vijay 18 (59), MS Dhoni 4 (3)

Among the wreck this morning is Murali Vijay, who was been batting very cautiously. He has not given any chance to the England bowlers to capitalise, and has watched the ball well. Three runs added off Jordan’s over.

India 33/4 | Overs 17 | M Vijay 15 (53), MS Dhoni 4 (3)

Second boundary of the morning — not a convincing one though. Woakes gets a thick outside edge off Dhoni’s bat and the ball runs down to four through the gully region.

India 28/4 | Overs 16 | M Vijay 14 (50), OUT! A Rahane c&b Jordan 0 (8)

BIG WICKET! India are in shambles as Chris Jordan takes a fine return catch to get rid of Ajinkya Rahane! This is turning out to be a disaster as India are falling apart quickly. Lose shot by Rahane who gives a return catch once again. MS Dhoni walks in.

India 28/3 | Overs 15 | M Vijay 14 (50), A Rahane 0 (2)

Chris Woakes replaces James Anderson as India collect two runs off him. With three batsmen down, India have a lot of hard work to do in this day and in the match.

India 26/3 | Overs 14 | M Vijay 12 (44), A Rahane 0 (2)

India are in deep, deep trouble. At the crease are two men who have helped them save some face in England on the tour. England on top.

India 26/3 | Overs 13.4 | M Vijay 12 (41),  OUT! V Kohli lbw b Jordan 6 (18)

Change in the bowling attack as Chris Jordan replaces Stuart Broad. Jordan has been erratic, and has not created much of an impact in this Test series. But no! He makes the breakthrough! Kohli doesn’t offer a shot and the ball raps him on the backfoot. After long, loud appeal and lot of consideration, Kumar Dharmasena thinks that’s out. Kohli is devastated. So is India.

India 26/2 | Overs 12 | M Vijay 12 (41),  V Kohli 5 (17)

First boundary for India in the innings and it comes off Virat Kohli’s bat. Anderson pitches it up too full, and Kohli leans forward a bit to smash it down the ground. Kohli has been hitting them well, but not many though. Buttler does impressive work behind the wickets to keep a bouncer that was on its way to another boundary after hitting Kohli on shoulder. Five runs come off that over.

India 21/2 | Overs 11 | M Vijay 12 (41),  V Kohli 1 (11)

Murali Vijay collects two runs through midwicket off Broad. The remaining five balls were probing and Vijay did well to negotiate them.

India 19/2 | Overs 11 | M Vijay 10 (35),  V Kohli 1 (11)

Vijay collects a single off Anderson on the fourth ball and Kohli does well to survive on the next two. India need these two to stay at the crease.

India 18/2 | Overs 10 | M Vijay 9 (31),  V Kohli 1 (9)

Virat Kohli is patient enough as he shoulders all delivery bowled outside the off-stump by Stuart Broad. Real test for Kohli to hang in there. Two runs collected from that over.

India 16/2 | Overs 9 | M Vijay 8 (30),  V Kohli 0 (4)

An inswinging bouncer from Anderson flies past the wicketkeeper as India get four runs via byes. Vijay does well to see off Anderson once again.

India 12/2 | Overs 8 | M Vijay 8 (24),  V Kohli 0 (4)

Loud appeal on the third ball as the ball clips Virat Kohli’s pads and flies to the wicketkeeper. Broad went up to the batsman while appealing. Kohli is beaten outside the off-stump on the next delivery.

India 11/2 | Overs 7 | M Vijay 7 (22),  V Kohli 0 (0)

Anderson creates all sorts of trouble for Vijay outside the off-stump. The England pacer beats Vijay couple of times. At the other end is Virat Kohli, who too is having a poor run in England.

India 10/2 | Overs 6 | M Vijay 6 (16), OUT! C Pujara b Broad 4 (19)

Cheteshwar Pujara is cleaned up by Stuart Broad! Disastrous start for India in the match as they have lost two wickets without any significant total on the board. The batsman failed to get his bat in time and the ball crashed into the wickets after hitting Pujara on the hand. England all over India at the moment.

India 10/1 | Overs 5 | M Vijay 6 (16), C Pujara 4 (13)

Vijay and Pujara scramble to add three runs from Anderson’s third over in the game. Not much trouble in this over with both the batsmen taking three singles and leaving the good balls.
India 7/1 | Overs 4 | M Vijay 5 (14), C Pujara 2 (9)

England pacers creating all sorts of trouble for the Indians in the middle. Pujara is hit on two incoming deliveries, and an edge off the second ball doesn’t carry to Alastair Cook at the first slip. England enjoying the domination at the moment. Pujara collects a single off the final ball from fine leg.

India 6/1 | Overs 3 | M Vijay 5 (14), C Pujara 1 (3)

James Anderson continues to trouble Murali Vijay a bit outside the off-stump. The second ball moves away sharply from the batsman who was trying to hit it. Vijay collects two runs off the third ball through the covers.

India 3/1 | Overs 2 | M Vijay 3 (9), C Pujara 0 (2)

Stuart Broad sends down his first over which is maiden. Murali Vijay was cautious enough to leave all deliveries bowled outside the off-stump.

India 3/1 | Overs 1 | M Vijay 3 (3), C Pujara 0 (2)

Superb start for England as James Anderson continues to dominate and haunt the Indian openers. The first hour is crucial for India, they have already lost their opener and out-of-form Cheteshwar Pujara has walked in.

India 3/1  | Overs 0.4 | M Vijay 3 (3) OUT! G Gambhir c Buttler b Anderson 0(1)

First wicket! Gautam Gambhir leaves the ball but it brushes the bat and Jos Buttler takes an easy catch. The ball moved a little away from Gambhir and he was not clear in mind as to play it or leave. Poor start this after Murali Vijay collected couple of runs through the covers as James Anderson sent down a lose delivery.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live blog of the fifth and final Test between India and England at The Oval. I am Devarchit Varma and I will be bringing the live updates from the match. India once again find themselves down in an overseas Test series. MS Dhoni has promised that the team has learnt from its mistakes and will put up a better show. The pitch though isn’t going to be as tricky as the ones before. The Oval is known to be conducive for the batsmen. India went down tamely at Southampton and Old Trafford. Their batting will be under scanner here. Read the preview of the fifth Test here

Analysing the collapse in the previous matches and what the batsmen will have to offer, Dhoni said, “We have spoken about it [the collapse at Old Trafford]. We have addressed that and it was not just that game. In the games before that also, we have lost some wickets in very short span of time. It is not really about addressing it but more about soaking it up, learning from the last game and make sure that we don’t repeat those mistakes.” More on Dhoni’s pre-match press conference here

Knowing that his pacers and Moeen Ali have softened India in the last two Tests, he is hungry to go for a win. We’re not going out there with any other mindset than this is a game to win,” said Cook. See more excerpts from Cook’s pre-match press conference here.

India have had some bitter-sweet memories here. Last time around they were smashed by England completing the 0-4 rout. This is the same venue where India registered there maiden series win in England in 1971.   Click here for complete stats analysis on India’s record at The Oval here

India are likely to include Ishant Sharma who has recovered from the ankle injury. Dhoni has clearly stated that they will play with five bowlers. Meanwhile for England, Stuart Broad is fit to take the field after injuring his nose off a Varun Aaron bouncer.

To read more stats analysis of matches at The Oval, click here. Meanwhile, here’s Arunabha Sengupta on some unusual facts and figures about The Oval. As mentioned earlier, this could be another batting wicket. The two teams have played 11 matches here and not once, the team winning toss has elected to bowl. However, rain could change that.

India 61/6 | Overs 34 | MS Dhoni 16 (57), R Ashwin 7 (7)

Broad comes from the other end and creates some sort of troubles for Dhoni. India might be looking to score some quick runs and get past 100 before they are blown away.
