Oh! well the great man Dhoni has again done for it CSK. He clambered a six off Faulkner before he played with a calm head on his shoulders to take them to a heart pounding victory. The six over wide long on was a trademark shot by the great man. One can only salute him for taking his team to a nail biting win. Well done!
Ravindra Jadeja smashes a six before MS Dhoni scrambles a few runs by raunning like jack rabbit to get it down to 12 runs of the last over. Can MSD again do it for Chennai? He has certainly done it many times before for his country and CSK.
More decent stuff from Faulkner and he also sends du Plessis on a long walk back the pavilion with a yorker. That is a big wicket and Rajasthan are yet again showing that they have incontrovertible self-belief to claw their way back from dire situations. They are certainly with a chance here.
OUT! du Plessis b J Faulkner 38(39)
Cooper continues to bowl his variations. He goes for a vociferous appeal with du Plessis batting but it was going down leg. A fine over that. So 31 runs required of 3 overs now. du Plessis is struggling a bit here. Just maybe Rajasthan have a chance to win this game.
Tambe into the attack. He beats Dhoni with a leg-break that beats MS Dhoni. Dhoni ends the over with a boundary to keep scorecard ticking. Rajasthan somehow need a wicket otherwise this game is over. Especially when one thinks that Dhonis one of the greatest finishers going around.
Bhatia with his dibbly dobblers gets Ashwin’s wicket. It brings the crowd favourite, MS Dhoni. Will he take it to the last over and win the game for CSK?
OUT! R Ashwin b R Bhatia 14(16)
Yet another dark horse emerges from @rajasthanroyals , Ankit Sharma, What a start. Effective with both bat and bowl. #CSKvsRR
It is James Faulkner who comes into bowl. Can he do something with his box of tricks? Well, that was a fine over, but they need wickets urgently. They have to get their act together during the strategy time out and come out with some strategy as this game is slipping away from Rajasthan rather quickly.
Bhatia continues to bowl his slow mediums. Will someone try to play a shot of him and get out? Ashwin does but that was more of deft placement rather than a shot in frustration. A fine boundary that from his willow. Rajasthan need wickets here.
It is Tambe who continues to bowl. A fine tight over from him but they need more of that as they have just got a wicket and this is the time to squeeze the opposition. Ashwin can bat for sure.
It is surprisingly Ashwin who has come into bat in the middle. What can be the strategy behind this move? It is Bhatia who continues to bowl at Chris Harris pace for Chennai. How much time should a batsman have to wait while facing Bhatia’s dibbly dobblers? A quiz question for you guys to answer!
Cooper into the attack. He starts with a full and straight one right at the base of the stumps. They need more of that from him. du Plessis though is collecting runs by exploring every nook and cranny of the ground. Oh! how did Smith get out there? A slower one and Smith loses his wicket by trying to turn it around the corner. A massive blow that.
OUT! D Smith c D Yagnik b K Cooper 44(35)
Every run that Dwayne Smith scores for CSK must feel like an errant acupuncture needle for MI management!
Tambe with his brand of flippers and wrong uns comes into the attack. It has to be remembered that modern day batsmen just struggle to pick a leg-spinner’s variations, especially the googly. Maybe he can get a wicket here? du Plessis certainly not picking him though he plays a reverse sweep to compile another boundary.
Smith is the man of the moment for Chennai. He plays a short arm job to essay another boundary. Runs are flowing like a gigantic river from his bazooka bat. If Rajasthan need to win they have to take his wicket sooner rather than later. The over ends with an inside edge off Smith’s bat going for a boundary.
Tambe surprises whenever you’re reminded of his age. Great fielding effort!
Until D Smith is around Chennai will feel safe. He has been in tremendous form and has duly won tidal wave of appreciation for his fine knocks. Another fine over by Ankit Sharma. Chennai despite losing two wickets will be happy with their run rate. But they need to keep wickets in hand.
The tallish Kevon Cooper has come into the attack. Well has he cleaned up du Plessis? Hmm, the bail hasn’t moved even one inch! du Plessis despite being a bottom handed players shows his class by essaying a boundary down the ground for a boundary.
Just at the right time Suresh Raina gets out to Ankit Sharma for 2. Now that is a huge blow for Chennai as Raina has been one of the vital cogs of their line-up. South African middle-order batsman, du Plessis has come into bat. He is known for playing sine shots through the on side.
OUT! S Raina c Bhatia b A Sharma 2(3)
Dwayne Smith’s shots through the off-die has been a revelation in the tournament. He climbs into the 42 year old young err veteran Ravin Tambe for couple of boundaries. Is Smith the improved player of IPL 7? A fine start for CSK for sure.
Suresh Raina has come into bat, as McCullum gets out caught by Nair off the bowling of Sharma. A big blow for Chennai that. However continues on his merry way with a boundary. Rajasthan need more wickets to comeback into the game at Ranchi.
OUT! B McCullum c K Nair b A Sharma 6(3)
Smith has definitely improved his game since he made his Test debut against South Africa in 2003-04 as his leg-side game has come up by leaps and bounds. He begins with a thunderous volley of strokes by essaying two sixes off James Faulkner.
Ankit Chavan who opened the batting is also opening the bowling. He just angles it into right-handed batsmen. Brendon McCullum and Dwayne both known for playing power packed shots open the batting for CSK. McCullum shows his class by thwacking Sharma for a six.
Rajasthan need some big shots in the last over of the innings. Yagnik and Bhatia are batting. However, Bhatia is out trying to slog across the line and gets out caught by Dwayne Smith in the deep. They end up with 148 for 8. Certainly about 20 runs less than a par score.
Ravindra Jadeja has cleaned up James Faulkner. A nothing shot that. They are losing their way here. Yagnik has come into bat for Rajasthan. Binny to loses his wicket in an attempt to up the ante.
OUT! J Faulkner b R Jadeja 1(4), S Binny c du Plessis b Jadeja 22(17)
The hero and colossus of the last game Steve Smith loses his wicket to Mohit Sharma. Sharma has his limitations but seems to thrive in IPL with his box of variations. He may not turn into Jamaes Anderson like one Ian Pont said but he can be a handy bowler in IPL. Anyways Faulkner the other hero of their last game has come into bat. He uses his reach well.
OUT! S Smith b M Sharma 9(8)
Ravindra Jadeja goes through his as quickly as you can imagine. Before you open your eyes the over is complete. Binny though clmabers into him for a six. A much needed six for them. They need a lot more of that on this batting paradise.
Aahwin bowls another tight over. Are Chennai going to restrict the opposition for a low score here? It seems to be happening sor sure, as Rajasthan are losing their way at Ranchi. They need a few big hits.
Karun Nair gets cleaned up by Samuel Badree. Rajasthan are losing their way for sure. They need a fine partnership. Chennai are back in the game.
OUT! K Nair b S Badree 8(11)
Pandey continues to bowl seam up for CSK. This is the time for Chennai to tighten the screws by bowling with fine control. Well, Ishwar is doing exactly that as the tall seamer bowls one into the block hole. Actually compared to a few of his teammates, he seems to come across as someone who belongs to the land of Brobdingnag.
This Shane Watson was born to keep sending the ball into the stands. He gives the ball from Mohit Sharma a mighty thump to reach his fifty. Mohit though gets his revenge by snaring the wicket of Watson. He sends his stumps for a walk in the park. A seam up delivery that actually didn’t do much off the track. Watson will be disappointed with that ugly hoick as he had got himself in and looked set for a monstrous score. Stuart Binny the stocky all-rounder now comes into bat. He almost chops one onto the stumps.
OUT! S Watson b M Sharma 51(36)
It is Karun Nair who can play fine shots on the up who has come into bat for Rajasthan at Ranchi. Ashwin bowling for Chennai. A nice double for Watto as he completes 2,000 runs and 50 wickets in the annals of IPL. Rajasthan need to keep the scoreboard ticking here as the deck is flat.
It is Ravindra Jadeja who continues to bowl for Chennai by going through his overs quickly. He is also getting the odd ball to turn. Oh! wait!A bad mix up sees Rahane losing his wicket. There was no run there as he pushed it around the corner and tried to run.
OUT! A Rahane run out 4(7)
A bad over from the youngster Vijay Shankar as he gets thwacked all over the park by Watson for 16 runs in the over. He won’t remember his first over in IPL for sure.
Ravindra Jadeja into bowl. He goes through his overs quickly and that is his specialty. He bowls a tight over to start with for CSK.
Ashwin bowling from around the wicket. He bowls a wide though. Another poor delivery and you don’t want Watson to give a second invitation as he thwacks that one with a slog sweep for a boundary that went at the speed of red-lightning. He continues to bowl wides. This is not helping CSK. However, they lose Sharma who looks to slog across the line and gets out for 30 off 27.
OUT! A Sharma c Smith b Ashwin 30(27)
Ishawar Pandey has the distinction of bowling the only maiden over in the #IPL 2014 in India #CSKvRR
Watson then showcases his classes by freeing his arms and clambering into Pandery for a boundary. It felt like it was an axe rather than a willow when he essayed that power packed shot. Here is a cricketer who since he impressed Waugh twins during the tour of South Africa in 2002-03 in a practice game has been known for his big hitting.
Sharma shows his class by smashing a boundary over long on region for a boundary. He then plays it around the corner for a boundary off Ashwin. Sharma ends the over with another towering six.
Badree continues to bowl with his brand of quickish sliders. Ankit looking in good touch here as he is using the depth of the crease. But in the end a fine over from Badree. At his best Badree just attacks the stumps and keeps it simple by bowling quick through the air.
Mohit Sharma the seamer into the attack. He wobbles the ball a bit in the air and has been in good form in IPL 7. He has settled into a decent line and length for Chennai. Sharma shows his aggression by thumping one down the ground for a boundary. He thwacks another boundary as well. Rajasthan are on their way here.
Samuel Badree continues to bowl for Chennai. He skids it off the surface most of the times. However he lose hisline while bowling to Wataon and it rockets to the boundary for byes. They need to keep the batsmen on tenterhooks here as they can’t allow Rajasthan to make a fine start.
Ishwar Pandey the seamer comes into bowl. He does get a bit of seam movement and bounce out of most tracks. He starts well by hitting decent lengths. A good start here by Rajasthan. Just at the right time Shane Watson bludgeons a six.
Rajasthan have won the toss and elected to bat on what looks like a flat deck. Samuel Badree will open the bowling for Chennai. He starts well to Ankit Sharma and gives away just two runs in the first over. Rajasthan looking to consolidate here.
Rajasthan Royals have won the toss at Ranchi and elected to bat. It means Chennai Super Kings will field. Rajasthan is captained by Shane Watson and Chennai by the ever present MS Dhoni. Sanju Samson has been dropped for Rajasthan.
Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live blog of match 37 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. I am Bharath Ramaraj and I will be bringing you the live updates. The Royals will be high on confidence after pulling off a sensational heist against Royal Challengers Bangalore the other night. Meanwhile, CSK have once again been the team to beat barring two occasions and both against the in-form Kings XI Punjab.
It’s the home ground of CSK skipper MS Dhoni and there will be plenty of support for them, but never underestimate the Royals who have turned in to a formidable squad with excellent finishers. n the bowling department, Mohit Sharma and Ben Hilfenhaus have been doing their seam-bowling duties well, while the R Ashwin-Ravindra Jadeja spin combo has been consistently firing. Ishwar Pandey too has done a good job, keeping things tight although he does not have too many wickets to show for his efforts. Mohit, Ashwin and Jadeja all enjoy economy rates below 8, which is not quite the case with Hilfenhaus, and Chennai will be hoping that he shows some improvement on that front.
Barring the game against Bangalore, the Rajasthan bowlers have been on the mark. Watson has been delivering with the ball, Pravin Tambe has done a superb job while Rajat Bhatia too has contributed. Kane Richardson and James Faulkner have not done badly either.
