Five needed. The first ball is a full toss which is battered high but falls in no-man’s land. Holder is mixing it up nicely but a bad half volley ends the game as Miller hammers it over the extra cover boundary for a six.
“He is no mug with the bat” — some wise man. Akshar Patel wallops on the leg side, carts the ball over the off-side field in the second delivery and gets another couple off the first three balls. Outstanding batting buy the young Indian southpaw. Then he gets a thick edge and the ball runs down to the third man boundary and gets a six off the last ball! Boy! take a bow Akshar
Jason Holder makes an excellent start with a neat and mean line of the first three balls and continues as the pressure builds on the batsmen. Miller, like the previous over, finishes things off with a boundary. 25 needed of the last two.
Emrit continues to spin and Perera, this time tries to clear the ropes and is caught comfortably in the deep after ball spent a millennium in the sky. Punjab are still losing the plot here.Miller smacks a huge six off the last ball to calm proceedings.
OUT! T Perera c Carter b Nurse 0(1)
James Franklin almost took one of the catches of the season but spoons it. The New Zealander stuck out his right hand after covering a lot of ground. Then he takes an easy catch as bailey tries to clear the ropes. Outstanding spell from Mendis.
OUT! Bailey c Franklin b J Mendis 7(11)
The spinners are becoming very hard to get away and the two foreign pros of Punjab are finding it very hard to find the fence. The target is still under Punjab’s control.
Jeevan Mendis continues to impress for the Barbados outfit and the batting is struggling with the spin. It was a high drama over with a close LBW shout, missed stumping et. al.
Miller shows his attacking prowess with a cracking punch of the back foot for a boundary. This partnership is vital for Punjab.
Jeevan Mendis continues with his leg-spin and is applying the brakes well and then gets the big scalp of Sehwag. The Indian opener is trapped in front and it looked like Sehwag nicked it before it hit his pads.
OUT! V Sehwag lbw b J Mendis 31(25)
Ashley Nurse brings some spin and he is spot on till the last ball of the over when Sehwag comes down the track and smacks one down the ground for a boundary.
Ravi Rampaul is unfortunately called for overstepping when a major chunk of his landing foot was on the line. Rampaul, however deceives Maxwell with a cleverly disguised slow delivery. The West Indian follows that with a bad ball and Maxwell tucks it away for a boundary. The Australian is looking dangerous and pulls over mid-wicket off the fifth ball for another boundary before flicking the ball straight to Ashley Nurse at fine leg to leave a deafening noise at Mohali.
OUT! G Maxwell c Nurse b Rampaul 16(8)
First ball and Punjab da Puttar Glendeep deploys the reverses sweep and its a boundary. The crowd is in raptures. Sehwag is well beaten by Mendis in the last three balls with some vicious turn.
The over sees a couple of good shots from Saha off the harmless medium pacers of Maxwell and yet another needless shot brings an end to the Saha’s stay just when he was getting set.
Saha c Munaweera b Franklin 14(13)
Saha is trying to give as much of the strike to Sehwag. Even the master blaster is going about his business calmly and I spoke too soon. Sehwag comes down the track and hits the ball over cover point for a boundary.
Vintage Sehwag at work again as he walks down the wicket and clubs James Franklin over the deep mid-wicket fence for a six. Punjab are moving along nicely here.
Sehwag plays a fine late cut to remind one and all that the hand-eye coordination is still fine as ever. Its another decent over for Punjab as the hosts race to fifty in just 8 overs.
After three great overs, Punjab start the over calmly and the batsmen seem under control of the situation. Vohra’s luck then runs out and its a shot that he shouldn’t have chosen and Rampaul looks to have gotten back his rhythm back.
M Vohra c Carter b Rampaul 27(19)
Yet again, Vohra is fortunate and the ball hits the top part of the bat and goes behind the keeper for a boundary. Holder is dejected and he ends up spraying down the leg side for two consecutive wides. Misfields aren’t helping and the Vohra continues to grow in form. Sehwag must be puzzled, don’t you think?
Ravi Rampaul starts awfully its a boundary of the first ball and is penalised for overstepping too. Vohra is caught of the free hit ball and gets another respite when two fielders collided and dropped a sitter. Nevertheless, its a solid start for the hosts.
Punjab were trying to get off to a good start and Manan Vohra cuts Holder and the ball and the ball beats the third man fielder for a six.
A big last over which saw Ashley Nurse send the ball to the third tier and Raymond Reifer continue his good work to help Barbados finish with a fighting total of 174.
J Holder c Miller b Awana 12(8)
Anureer Singh will bowl the penultimate over and the length is excellent from the young sardar in the first three balls. He leaves no chance for the batsmen. The fourth ball is a full toss and despite being mistimed, the ball reaches the boundary and Reifer reaches his fifty and is a well made one.
After a long wait, Reifer gets a boundary and its an an old fashioned agricultural whack down the ground and it beats the long off fielder and its a six! Then the big man Jason Holder gets his turn to flex his muscles and the ball sails over the fence for another six. Expensive from Akshar.
Perera cannot do no wrong these days. After a strike in the previous over, the Sri Lankan medium-pacer removes the Zimbabwean captain as he tries to clear the infield and is caught by Anureet at mid-off. Credit to Perera for building up the pressure though. Punjab have clawed their way back!
OUT! E Chigumbura c Anureet b Perera 3(5)
Akshar is handed another over by Bailey and this time, its a rather quiet over by the left-arm spinner and its six singles of the over. Its was typical subcontinent fare tidiness from Akshar.
Perera comes back and yet again, its pitched slightly short and Franklin heaves heaves the ball to the deep mid wicket boundary. The Kiwi all-rounder tries to do the same of the next ball, but this time he fins only the safe hands of Parvinder Awana in the deep.
OUT! J Franklin c Awana b Perera 10(8)
Akshar Patel comes into the attack and after a couple of decent deliveries sprays the ball wide and Reifer cuts the ball fine and its a boundary.
Anureet Singh comes back and he strikes of the first ball as Jonathan Carter can only find the safe hands of David Miler at long on. James Franklin, another left hander comes to the crease.
OUT! J Carter c Miller b Karanveer 20(18)
Its Thisara Perera’s medium pacers into the attack and the first balls are tidy and the line is spot on. The good work by the bowler is undone as Carter gets the toe edge of his bat and the ball rolls to the boundary.
Maxwell continues into the attack and Raymond Reifer launches into the Australian that yields a six and four of the first four balls. The six was struck straight down the ground and was hit clean as a whistle. Maxwell expresses his displeasure at his fielders for letting the batsmen cross two in the last ball of the over.
Its Karanveer Singh who will replace Sehwag and it was tossing the ball up and trying to tie the batsmen down. Reifer then reverse-sweeps behind square and its a boundary for Reifer. He is holding it together at the moment for Barbados.
Maxwell continues and once again the line is spot on by the Australian but the fourth delivery is wayward is swept to the vacant deep midwicket fence for a boundary by Reifer. Carter keeps strike.
Sehwag comes into the attack and is greeted with loud cheers by the Mohali crowd. Reifer wants to be the antithesis of his other Wes Indian namesake and smashed the Indian batting legend down the ground for a six, just beating the long off fielder.
The double strike has put the batsmen under the cosh and Maxwell’s tight line suffocated the batsmen and a mere two runs comes off the over.
Parvinder Awana strikes and it is Perkins trying to play across the line and its plumb in front. Billy Bowden raises his crooked finger. Awana bowls an excellent bounder to welcome the batsman to the crease. Munaweera dabs the ball high in the air and Manan Vohra drops the ball under the lights. After a boundary to get his fifty down the fine leg boundary, Manan takes a smart catch at short mid wicket to send the danger man packing. Its been an entertaining knock though.
W Perkins lbw b Awana 10(8), D Munaweera c Vohra b Awana 50(26)
Bailey has turned to spin and it is the IPL sensation Akshar Patel who is into the attack. The left-arm spinner slows the pace Munaweera is watchful. Three dot balls and a darter is belted down the ground for a four and then sends the ball sailing over the ropes for another monstrous six. This is calypso stuff!
Sehwag spoons it! Awana’s half-volley finds the toe end of Perkins’ bat and the ball loops high up in the air and Sehwag can’t grasp it on time as his jump is mistimed. Then a short-ish delivery is muscled over deep-midwicket for a huge six. Munaweera wants more and goes hard on the off-side but the ball is cut off in the deep neatly as the batsmen cross three. The Punjab medium-pacer ends the over well with two dot balls.
Munaweera finds the gap again and its two more to the taking of the first ball. Rooted to the crease, the Sri Lankan again finds the top edge of the fourth delivery but the ball eludes fielder Sehwag. Then there is a touch of Dilshan in Munaweera where he scoops the ball stylish behind the keeper to bring 10 of the over.
The local lads start the first two overs here and Parvinder Awana bowls the second over and Perkins pulls the ball on the leg side into the vacant areas to get a boundary. Awana comes back with two good deliveries. The fifth ball is pitched short and this time Munaweera pulls again with little footwork and its another four. Perkins then goes over the top again and the ball beats first slip and its the third boundary of the over.
Anureet Singh steams in for the first over and he torments Perkins off the first three balls. The Sri Lankan Munaweera is rapped on the pads off the second ball but the ball was pitching outside off. Then he takes the Ariel route and smashes a four over extra cover and muscles a a six down the ground. Good start for Barbados.
