Ben Hilfenhaus is awarded the man-of-the-match award for his outstanding figures of three wickets for 14 runs from his quota of four overs. It will be interesting to see how the Northern Knights deal with this defeat, though they have no reason to start fretting as yet.
Memorable victory for the Hobart Hurricanes as they will head to the next game with full confidence. While the Hurricanes’ batting started on a slow note, the likes of Tim Paine, Shoaib Malik and Aiden Blizzard brought the Hurricanes back into the game and blew the opposition bowlers away. The Northern Knights were expected to give a befitting reply given the performance of the top-order in the recent games. What happened instead was a bit of an anti-climax for the fans who expected a tough contest. The Knights probably would not have crossed the 50-run mark had it not been for the quickfire knocks by Scott Styris and Tim Southee. Read the full match report here.
And the match comes to an end as the Hobart Hurricanes register an 86-run win. The Knights have been completely decimated in the game. Boliinger takes three wickets in four balls to end with figures of 2.4-0-22-3. The Knights were outbatted, outbowled and outfielded at Raipur today.
OUT! Tim Southee c Hilfenhaus b Bollinger 21 (12)
Nine wickets down for Knights as Bollinger looks to end things quickly. Trent Boult last man to walk in.
OUT! Ish Sodhi c Birt b Bollinger 0 (2)
Another wicket four deliveries as Knights lose 8th wicket.
OUT! Jono Boult c Wells b Bollinger 1 (2)
The last hope for the Knights fades away as Styris is caught at the cover region while attempting to play a wide full-toss.
OUT! Scott Styris c Wells b Mennie 37 (27)
15 runs off the previous over by Ben Laughlin as the Knights look to extract some respect from the possible defeat that stares at them at the moment. A massive six by Southee over backward square leg and a four off the last delivery of the over help delay the inevitable for the Northerns.
Southee gets into the act as he sends the fourth delivery of Doherty’s destructive over for a six and refuses to give up. Southee and Styris should provide for some entertainment now with both in a mood to attack.
The sixth wicket falls as the Kuggeleijn plays down the wrong line and gets his leg-stump rattled. Utter disaster for the Knights!
OUT! Scott Kuggeleijn b Doherty 2 (6)
Four runs from the previous over by Ben Laughlin as even Scott Styris seems to have calmed down after the recent dismissal and is dealing with singles at the moment.
A wicket-maiden over by Xavier Doherty as the Hurricanes are back into the game after a partnership that was starting to look menacing for the bowling side. The Asking rate is now touching nearly 15 an over at the moment as the Knights have a little more than a slim chance of a victory from here on. The only hope for the New Zealand side is the presence of Styris and his dismissal would pretty much seal the deal for the Hurricanes.
The lively partnership meets its end as Watling falls victim to a brilliant delivery by Doherty that foxes him completely. Comes down the track as the ball turns away from the batsman and gives skipper Paine an easy stumping.
OUT! Daryl Mitchell st. Paine b Doherty 9 (20)
Four leg byes from Styris’s pad off the first delivery of Laughlin’s over adds to the woes of the Hurricane. Styris is beginning to up the ante and Mitchell will be expected to join the bandwagon soon if they team are to progress from this stage. Ten runs come from the over as the partnership is now worth 44 runs from 26 balls and is the only source of hope now for the Knights. The Hurricanes in the mean time will look to end the stand that is starting to get worrisome with each delivery.
Six of the second delivery of the Bollinger, the first in the match and the 100th in the tournament so far. Slogs it down towards long-on as the fielder accidentally steps on the boundary ropes while attempting to take a catch. Tries to throw back it in but is too late. Styris sends the third and the fourth deliveries for consecutive fours to bring up his personal landmark of 4000 runs in all forms of Twenty20 cricket and becomes the second cricketer after Kieron Pollard to achieve the double of 4000 runs and 100 wickets in a T20 career. 16 runs from the last over as Styris is beginning to show definite signs of resistance against the rampaging Hobart Hurricanes.
The duo of Mitchell and Styris are dealing in singles so far in Doherty’s second over of the match. as the run-rate is less than four runs per over, going by which the Knights would end at a total of around 80 at the end of their quota of 20 overs.
Styris brings some relief in the Knight’s camp by sending the last delivery off the Bollinger for a four, the second boundary of the innings so far. Styris is known for his big-hitting abilities, which he has displayed for his national side on several instances in the past.
Watling is sent back to the pavilion after a dubious lbw decision by the umpire, disallowing the batsmen from settling down. Hilfenhaus in the meantime has picked his third wicket of the innings so far and has pretty much set the foundation for a possible win from here onwards.
OUT! BJ Watling lbw Hilfenhaus 9 (14)
The lowest powerplay score in the tournament so far as the scoreboard looks miserable from the Northern Knights point of view. Xavier Doherty bowls his first over as skipper Paine looks to phase pace out with spin for the moment.
Hilfenhaus’ second over brings about the first boundary of the Knight’s innings in the third delivery of the over. The batsmen at the crease will look to see the pacers through, as the pressure is mounting on the batting team with each delivery bowled.
Another tight over from Joe Mennie as four runs come off it. The Hurricanes seem to have tightened the noose around the Northern Knight’s neck and the latter will need a solid partnership between Watling and Mitchell at the crease if they are to harbour any hopes.
Absolute disaster of an over for the Northern Knights as they have already lost three wickets for a mere five runs and don’t look like reaching a three-digit total at this rate. Hilfenhaus in the meantime has made a brilliant comeback into this game after an expensive outing in the previous game.
Hilfenaus makes it two in two as the Knights are on the pathof self-destruction at the moement. Flynn manages an inside edge and the ball crashes into the stumps while attempting to play a drive.
OUT! Daniel Flynn b Hilfenhaus 0 (1)
The Knights are stating to crumble at the moment. Tried to go for the slog, but ended up playing a half-hearted shot to give an easy catch at mid-off
OUT! Kane Williamson c Doherty b Hilfenhaus 3 (8)
Joe Mennie comes in to bowl the second over. Doug Bollinger puts down a tricky catch as he fails to get his footing right in the third delivery of the over to give Devcich a fresh new lease of life. BRILLIANT CATCH of the last delivery of the match as the Hurricanes strike the first blow into the heart of the Knights. Attempts a cut off the final delivery as Laughlin dives to his right.
OUT! Anton Devcich c Laughlin b Mennie 2 (8)
Ben Hilfenhaus is set to bowl the first over as the asking rate for the New Zealand outfit at the start of their innings is just shy of nine runs per over. Three consecutive singles of the first three deliveries. The next three go for dots as Hilfenhaus keeps the first over tight by conceding a mere three runs.
The players walk out to bat after the innings break as the play is set to resume shortly.
Fierce display of batting by the likes of Aiden Blizzard, Shoaib Malik and Tim Paine helped Hobart Hurricanes post a total of 178 for three after a slow start during the first six overs. The Northern Knights will hope for a strong response from the opening batsmen Anton Devcich and Kane Williamson and maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament so far. End of the innings for the Hobart Hurricanes. The last over by Southee goes for ten runs as Shoaib Malik misses out on a well-deserved half-century as he finishes on a score of 45 from 22 balls at a strike-rate of over 200.
The Knights finally get a much-needed dismissal as Aiden Blizzard finally departs, bringing the curtains down on a spectacular partnership. Slower delivery from Southee foxes Blizzard miscues it and ends up holing a catch to Styris at short third man.
OUT! Aiden Blizzard c Styris b Southee 62 (43)
The 150-run mark is brought up in the first delivery, and Blizzard brings up his second consecutive half-century with a boundary off the second delivery off Trent Boult. Four consecutive boundaries off Blizzard’s bat as he he has lived up to his expectations of thwarting the opposition attack so far. Eight boundaries in the 62 runs scored by Blizzard so far. Shoaib Malik winds the over up with anither boundary as Boult concedes a remarkable 21 runs off the over and the 100-run partnership comes up between Blizzard and Malik
The highest third-wicket partnership worth 73 runs from 41 balls comes up between Aiden Blizzard and Shoaib Malik as the two have managed to up the ante at the right time. Malik’s strike rate is over 200 at the moment. Southee looks clueless at the moment as he . Third man goes wider for the last man as Southee ends his third over with 13 runs conceded.
The ball has been changed by the umpires after Styris complains off it slipping out of his ball, in order to prevent any further runs getting leaked by the next bowler. Trent Boult is however taken to task as the first and the fourth deliveries are sent towards the boundary ropes. Boult concedes 13 runs off the over as the Knights are starting to leak runs from all corners now.
Malik despatches Styris’s second delivery for a four in the third-man region, the impressive figures maintained by Styris in the match so far are beginning to get ruined! A four and six in the last two deliveries of the over make it the most expensive over in the match so far, with 19 runs coming off it. The fifty-run partnership is up between Malik and Blizzard is up at the same time.
Seven runs off the over and the 100-run mark comes up for the Hurricanes. The 150-run mark will be a minimum benchmark for the Tasmanians from this point onwards as Blizzard and Malik will go for the kill with just five overs left in the match now.
Styris comes in to bowl his third over of the match and the best Blizzard and Malik can do is to milk singles and doubles of the first few deliveries. The bowling method followed by Styris is still full and straight. Eight runs come off the over, the most runs he has conceded in any of his overs so far.
Sodhi comes in to bowl his final over of the innings as Shoaib Malik smashes him down mid-wicket for a boundary. Malik betters it in the next ball as he smashes a 93-metre six in the fifth delivery over long-off. Sodhi finished with figures of 31 for one in four overs.
The second delivery by Styris is a brilliant yorker as it decieves Blizzard completely and nearly dismisses him in the process. Just four runs from the over so far.
The dismissal comes in as a major blow for the Hurricanes as a well-set batsman departs and the Knights will use this opportunity to turn the screws on the Hurricanes. Scott Styris to bowl the next over.
Skipper Paine is dismissied after an entertaining knock which helped recover the run rate. Attempts to go for the big hit as Paine makes some room for himself. Doesn’t get the required power as Trent Boult takes an easy catch at long-off
OUT! Tim Paine c Boult b Sodhi 43(34)
The second delivery of the second over of Kuggeleijn is sent down the track towards long-off courtesy a beautiful shot by Paine. Same result in the fourth and fifth deliveries as Tim Paine is looking to attack every delivery from here on.
Blizzard finally gets into the act as he comes down the track to smash Sodhi’s second delivery for a four over long-off. The fifty-run mark is breached in the third delivery of the over. The run rate is starting to catch up for Hobart.
Trent Boult’s elder brother, Jono comes in to bowl the eighth over with his right-arm off-spin. Well stopped by Scott Styris in the fifth delivery at leg gully. SIX! The last delivery is smashed for a six over mid-wicket, the first six of the match.
Ish Sodhi comes in to bowl as spin is finally introduced into the attack. The third ball of the over is a dropped chance as Blizzard comes down the track and attempts to hit the ball down the track, only for the ball toi graze past Sodhi’s hand. The last ball of the over is despatched towards the boundary by Paine.
The wicket of Ben Dunk is forgotten as Tim Paine launches an attack against Kuggeleijn in the fifth and sixth deliveries of the match. End of the fielding restrictions as spin is expected to come into play.
The first blow finally arrives for the Hobart Hurricanes as Benk Dunk fails to impress this time. Attempts a slog against a slower delivery, only for him to get a top edge and get caught by Tim Southee at mid-on.
OUT! Ben Dunk c Southee b Kuggeleijn 12 17)
Veteran all-rounder Scott Styris comes in to bowl in the first change of bowling by the Northern Knights. The Knights have fielded brilliantly so far and are making the most of the fielding restrictions. The last two deliveries are dot balls as the first of Styris’s overs end on a good note.
After the boundary off the last ball of the previous over, Southee’s well-pitched deliveries are starting to restrict the flow of runs once again. Three runs from the over as Hobart will be looking to get the boundaries flowing soon.
The junior Boult returns to his aggressive self and his third delivery is the first short-pitched ball of the match so far. Fourth delivery goes for a quiet single. The last delivery of the over goes for a four as Dunk plays a superb straight drive to ruin an otherwise good over.
The second delivery of the Tim Southee over goes for an outside edge off the bat of Tim Paine, which results in a couple of runs. Southee in the meantime is bowling the full-length deliveries and ends the over on a good note, conceding only four runs.

The Knights are on a golden run in the tournament so far. A spotless performance in the qualifiers was followed by a thumping win against Cape Cobras with the in-form Kane Williamson just getting better and going on to score a century. He has been ably supported by Anton Devcich. One of the reasons for the Knights’ success is this opening partnership. Their bowling has been equally strong thanks to experienced pacers in Tim Southee and Trent Boult. What will be the Knights XI, click here
The Hobart overcame a defeat against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) to post a crushing win over Cape Cobras. Ben Dunk and Aiden Blizzard, both having played for Mumbai Indians, in the Indian Premier League (IPL), made the most of their experience of Indian conditions, playing a handy role in the match against the Cobras. Will their batting seems to be in place, the bowling looks almost certain with Doug Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus striking early on. Click here to know more about the Hurricanes XI
