Whatte catch! Sri Lanka have won this thriller by 25 runs as England go down fighting. Bopara is the last man out, with Kusal Perera taking a superb catch in the deep to bring an end to this innings and the match!
OUT! Bopara c K Perera b T Perera 65 (62)
Big wicket! Ajantha Mendis has cleaned up James Tredwell as Sri Lanka are now just one wicket away from a win! England and Bopara need Harry Gurney to stay at the crease for long.
OUT! J Tredwell b Mendis 6 (11)
Ravi Bopara has scored his half-century, but England need him to hang in there. Only four boundaries and two sixes, but he seems to be doing the job for England in this game. England need another 42 runs to win from last five overs.
Moeen Ali is OUT! England lose their sixth wicket and a batsman who stood strong against this Sri Lankan bowlers. Ravi Bopara is settled at the crease, and England need 115 runs to win from 19 overs.
OUT! Moeen Ali c and b J Mendis 119 (87)
Excellent effort by Moeen Ali as he gets to his maiden ODI century off just 72 balls, studded with 10 fours and four sixes! But the job is not done yet. This century is the third fastest in the format for England. What an effort!
England are losing wickets at a rapid rate here. Jos Buttler is cleaned up by Dhammika Prasad as the tourists have now lost half of their side. Moeen Ali is going strong, but he might have run out of partners now.
OUT! J Buttler b Prasad 21 (21)
Sri Lanka have pegged England back with three quick strikes. After Joe Root followed Ian Bell back to the dressing room. Thisara Perera the beneficiary of some tight bowling and attacking field settings, as he nicked Root out through to Kumar Sangakkara. Next to go was Eoin Morgan cleaned up by Ajantha Mendis for a duck.
OUT! Eoin Morgan 0 (3) b Mendis
England lose Ian Bell against the run of play. Bell edged one outside off and surprisingly Angelo Matthews had a slip in place who gobbled it up, despite the dominant position England were in. It finally paid dividends.
OUT! Ian Bell 35 (35) c Jayawardena b Perera
England have raced past the 100 run mark in the 14th over. Moeen Ali is continuing to play his shots in the same vein as he was during the powerplay overs with able support from Ian Bell at the other end. England now require another 217 runs from 216 balls.
The England innings is rollicking along as the Powerplay overs come to an end. Meanwhile Moeen Ali has brought up his 3rd One-Day international fifty in just six games. Ian Bell hasn’t let the tempo down since his arrival either.
England had begun briskly in pursuit of the 318 set by Sri Lanka before losing Alastair Cook who was given out lbw for the third time in his short stay at the crease but wisely chose not to review the decision this time. So Sri Lanka third time lucky as Ian Bell comes out to join Moeen Ali in the middle who is stroking the ball like a dream, batting on 46 of 23 balls with the help of nine hits to the fence. England have shot ahead of the original required run rate courtesy Moeen Ali, who took 19 runs of a Dhammika Prasad over. England will look to continue the momentum despite Cook’s dismissal.
OUT! Alastair Cook 10 (17) lbw Dilshan
Cook looks a goner very next ball – and is given again – but DRS shows this one is going over too! How’s your luck? pic.twitter.com/bMPDabN83R
England yet to open their account as they need to chase down a mammoth 318. Cook survives two close calls of leg-before as the review saves him on both occasions.
Thrimanne gets an inside-edge off the first ball and they get a couple for that. After a dot ball, Thrimanne gets a single. That brings up the 50-run stand. Mendis then plays down the ground for a single. Thirimanne then gets a single down the ground. Mendis then plays one to the deep for a single. A single to finish as Thirimanne digs out a yorker. Only six runs off the last over.
The first ball has been smashed for a six. Jeevan Mendis gets a short ball from Woakes and he has pulled it over fine-leg for a maximum. Mendis then plays one to the deep for a single. Thirimanne then gets a single to the deep. Mendis then drives through long-off and that has gone for a four. The 300 is up for Sri Lanka. Woakes bowls a slower ball outside the off-stump and Mendis smashes it down the ground for a six. Great shot by Mendis! Woakes then bowls a wide down the leg-side. Mendis plays the last ball through the leg-side and gets two. That over has gone for 21.
Moeen Ali is back and Thirimanne goes inside out over cover and it is a four. He then takes a single to allow Mendis back on strike. Mendis then takes a single. They get nine runs off this over. No major risks taken.
Thirimane gets a boundary over mid-wicket. But in the next over, Perera is gone first ball as he tries to clear the off-side and is caught by the mid-on fielder. Jeevan Mendis is the new man in the middle. He pulls one off the second ball he faces and it has gone square for a four. Good shot against Chris Woakes.
OUT! T Perera 4(6)
Perera takes a single to get off the mark. Thirimanne is in the middle. The two have to take it to England and do not have much time in the middle. Thirimanne gets a single to the deep to get off the mark. The last ball is worked to the deep for another single.
Tredwell continues from one end. The Sri Lankan batsmen pick that one boundary in the over and then try to work it around. Tredwell bowls a full toss and Mathews slogs it over long-on for a maximum. He then dances down the ground and smashes it straight and it has gone for another six. What a shot! What form for Mathews! That brings up the 250 for Sri Lanka. He then charges down the ground again and it is hit high in the air. But, Ben Stokes takes the catch at long-on, just inside the boundary. It was very well judged by Stokes. Good innings by Mathews. The dangerman goes. And Jayawardene is gone! The ball goes down the leg-side and there seems to be a tickle. He has to go. Sri Lanka will have two new men in the middle.
OUT! A Mathews 33(24) M Jayawardene 55(58)
James Tredwell continues. There is a boundary earlier in the over as Jayawardene gets to his half century. Good innings by the veteran here. Mathews is now continuing to work it around. Sri Lanka will want to accelerate now as they are into the last 10 overs.
Angelo Mathews is on as Sri Lanka continue to pick the occasional boundaries. Jayawardene is now moving closer to his 50. Mathews gets a six as he smashes one over long-on. At the end of 40 overs, Sri Lanka are 223 for three. They have a good platform to accelerate in the last 10 overs.
Dilshan is out. Woakes bowls a slower ball and Dilshan edges it back to the bowler, who takes a good catch diving to his right in his follow-through.
OUT! T Dilshan 88(99)
It has been a very quiet powerplay so far. Harry Gurney has bowled very well, by taking the pace off the ball. Sri Lanka are only able to work it around and get the runs. Finally, Jayawardene gets a boundary as he pulls one through square-leg for a four. It bounces just in front of the boundary. That is the first boundary in the powerplay. The 200 is up wit that. The over is done as Jayawardene goes over mid-on and it trickles into the boundary.
Sri Lanka have taken the batting powerplay a bit earlier. Chris Woakes has been reintroduced into the attack. A quiet start to the batting powerplay. Sri Lanka are in a good spot as drinks have been called for.
Eoin Morgan almost pulled off a magnificent catch! It was hit wide of him at mid-wicket and Morgan dived to his left and was parallel to the ground when he got his hand to the ball. It has gone to ground. Jayawardena and Dilshan are content in working the strike around. England have the slower bowlers on and the Sri Lankans have had no issues so far.
Some consolidation after those double strikes. Cook is shuffling his bowlers around well and has now brought back Harry Gurney. Jayawardene drives through the off-side but the outfield is slow. In fact, a lot of the shots are not going through to the boundary. Sri Lanka would have lost a few runs there.
Sangakkara is out! Or is he? Moeen came from round the wicket and there is turn and Sangakkara is hit in front. He reviewed and he has been given the marching orders. It was pretty adjacent.
OUT! K Sangakkara 2(3)
Perhaps that was the only way they would have picked a wicket! Perera is run-out. Dilshan hit it towards the leg-side and went for one. Perera sprinted back for the second but Dilshan was unmoved. With both batsmen at one end, England have effected the run-out quite easily.
OUT! K Perera 59(74)
Ravi Bopara has come into the attack as Dilshan moves closer to fifty. The experienced batsman gets his fifty as he gets an inside edge and that has gone for a single. This is his 42nd ODI fifty. And Perera has been dropped. he tried to go over the top at mid-wicket and that has not been taken. The fielder did well to jump and outstretch his hand, but it has not been taken. Good effort though.
Dilshan takes a single off Joe Root. And then Perera sweeps one for a four. He then takes a single to take Sri Lanka past 100. This has been a very good partnership.
That is his half-century. Perera cuts one behind point and gets two. That is his half-century. Well played there1 Now Dilshan too is in his 40s. He should get it soon. Problems for England.
Sri Lanka knock it around. The spinners are in force as Moeen Ali has also been brought on. Perera is moving closer to his fifty but has slowed down a touch.
Perera has suddenly taken the attack. He has smashed the bowling around to race into his 40s. Ben Stokes came to bowl the 12th over and the first three balls were smashed for fours. The third one was hit over mid-on. Perera has helped Sri Lanka capitalise on that start and they now seem to be in an attacking mood.
James Tredwell had come on and Sri Lanka continue to knock it around. This has been a decent start for Sri Lanka.
Dilshan is moving along nicely. Perera cuts one over point and gets a couple for that. The outfield is slow. Later, Dilshan pulls one for a four.
Sri Lanka had a streaky start as Dilshan got an inside-edge and it went for a four down the leg-side. Later, Harry Gurney came on to bowl the second over and Dilshan smashed it through cover for a four. Chris Woakes comes on and Perera seems to be playing himself in. Dilshan then pulls one and that has gone for a four. Dilshan banged into Woakes as he tried to run. He was hit on the helmet in the collision. The physio comes out.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live coverage of the first One-Day International (ODI) between Sri Lanka and England which will be played at Colombo on Wednesday.
According to AFP, England will look to settle scores against Sri Lanka after their bad-tempered clash earlier this year when the two sides meet in a pre-World Cup one-day series from Wednesday.
The seven-match tour has been spiced up by comments from England captain Alastair Cook that his team will try to exact revenge for the Test and one-day defeats at home.Cook’s status as captain came under heavy pressure after the 1-0 Test defeat, and tempers frayed in the ODIs when off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake controversially ran out Jos Buttler before delivering a ball.
“There is a World Cup at the end of it, but we are here to try and win this series,” Cook said on arrival. “I think we owe you (Sri Lanka) a little bit of revenge.”
The ‘Mankaded’ dismissal by Senanayake, since suspended for an illegal bowling action, is considered to be against cricket’s spirit of fair play. But Sri Lanka insisted Buttler was earlier warned for backing up, and senior pro Mahela Jayawardene lashed out at Cook for questioning Senanayake’s run-out.
Squads:
England: Alastair Cook (c), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler (wk), Steven Finn, Harry Gurney, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan Eion Morgan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, James Taylor, James Tredwell, Chris Woakes.
