(Pakistan aim to topple Sri Lanka in their own backyard in the two-Test series. Catch live cricket score and live updates of the match here)
The Play has been called off for Today. Though the official closing time is 6 pm but because of heavy rain late in the day, the ground was flooded and no more play is possible today. Sri Lanka just lost one wicket in the whole day and is in the driver’s seat. Pakistan will have to take early wickets at the start of fourth day to get back in the game.
Tea has been extended now. It is still raining at Galle. Still chances of play is very less.
Rain has stopped play at Galle again, for the third time in the day. It looks gloomy. Dark clouds covered the sky and its raining heavily. 80 overs have been bowled and the new ball will be taken by Pakistan. But very little chance of any play today.
Kumar Sangakkara reaches his 37th Hundred in Test match cricket. Now he is fourth on the all time list. Only Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Kallis above him. He celebrated this moment with his best mate Mahle Jayawardene. He also now has 10 hundreds against Pakistan.
Mahela Jayawardene, who is playing his second last Test match gets his 49 half century in Test match cricket against Pakistan at Galle. He celebrated this moment with Kumar Sangakkara, who whom he has shared many memorable partnerships.
Sri Lanka started well after rain delay. Sangakkara is nearing his 37th Ton. Jayawardene is nearing his half century too. Pakistan need a wicket to get beck in the game.
Rain has stopped play again. Second time after lunch. There is already a delay of 35 minutes. Now here comes the covers again. Though it is just a light rain but the groundsmen are taking no chance. They are covering the pitch.
Mohammad Talha bowling tightly to Jayawardene. Only three runs have come in first over after lunch and Rain delay. It will be interesting to see, if there is any effect of the rain on the pitch or not. Abdur Rehman is bowling from the other end. Surprisingly Saeed Ajmal hasn’t started bowling after the break!!
The match has resumed. Mohammad Talha is starting proceedings for Pakistan.
The Rain has stopped!! And nearly 100 groundsmen are working to get the covers off. It took a delay of 35 minutes.
Rain has stopped play. A sharp shower has descended and the ground is covered now. The play hasn’t started after lunch. Bad news for the crowd, who has came to the ground to watch Sri Lanka bat. This break will not help the Sri Lankan progress.
Lunch on day three. Both Sangakkara and Jayawardene batted bit carefully till lunch. It was Sri Lanka’s session. Kaushal Silva was the only wicket to fall, to a brilliant one-handed catch by the keeper, but Sanga has continued to pile on the runs. Mahela walked in to fireworks show that held up play for around five minutes and looked a touch eager to start with.
Close call for Mahela Jayawardene!! That is a massive error in judgement from Mahela! He asks for a review, but he is dead there. It was a length ball on the middle and off line and Mahela doesn’t play a shot to that and he is stuck on the back foot! Mahela moves about a bit before asking for a review.. but there is the lifeline.. the ball tracker shows that it was missing off.. big big reprieve for Mahela.
Superb catch by the keeper! Silva pushes at a length delivery and slightly pushes inside the line, he gets a thick outside edge that is dying towards the right of the keeper. Sarfraz dives to his right and plucks it with one hand. It brings Mahela Jayawardene in the crease.
OUT! Kaushal Silva 64 (140) c Sarfraz Ahmed b Mohammad Talha
Kaushal Silva who was not out on day two reached his half century. Kumar Sangakkara is also batting aggressively. He reached his half century in the 45th over. After playing 123 balls he reached this milestone.
50 up for Silva.
Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live blog of the first day of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Galle. I am Sandipan Banerjee and I’ll be bringing the live updates of the match. After a defeat to South Africa for the first time on their home soil in 21 years, the Lankan side will be eager to fight back and restore their pride. Meanwhile, the Pakistan side is a new one with Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan being the senior pros in an otherwise young batting line-up.
Younis Khan slammed his 24th century in Test cricket as Pakistan recovered from a shaky start to post a total of at stumps, against Sri Lanka in the opening Test match of their two-match series at Galle on Wednesday. The lower order continued to frustrate the Sri Lankan bowlers later in the day till they posted a big total of 451. Sri Lanka came out to bat in the post tea session and lost their opener Upul Tharanga. The veteran Kumar Sangakkara and Kaushal Silva who was the other opener is still at the crease and looks quiet solid in their approach. Their were plenty of chances created but these two got the better of the Pakistani bowlers till the stumps on Day 2 on Thursday. Sri lanka would like to keep their scoreboard ticking when they come out to bat Friday.
