South African batsman AB de Villiers on Thursday completed 7,000 runs in Test cricket, during the first day’s play of the second Test against Australia at the St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth.

De Villiers achieved the feat when he cracked a boundary off Australia pacer Peter Siddle in the 75th over of the day.

De Villiers, playing in his 91st match of the career has been a prolific scorer for the South African side in the recent years. He averages well above 51, and has 18 centuries and 35 half-centuries to his credit from 90 Tests for South Africa.

The right-handed batsman was the only bright spot for the South Africans in the first Test, wherein they were thrashed by 281 runs by Australia at Centurion. de Villiers scored 91 and 48 in the two innings.

With this achievement, de Villiers became the fourth batsman in South Africa’s history to cross the 7,000-run mark. Jacques Kallis leads the table with Graeme Smith and former cricketer Gary Kirsten following him at the second and third spot.

De Villiers also joined Kallis at the second spot in the list of batsmen who reached the 7,000-run mark in quick time. Smith leads the table having taken 148 innings to achieve the feat, followed by Kallis and de Villiers. Kirsten is third in the table.
