South Africa’s vice-captain and man-in-form, AB de Villiers has brought up his 19th Test ton against Australia on Day Two of the second Test at Port Elizabeth.
South Africa’s middle-order mainstay, de Villiers reached the landmark in 201 balls, as South Africa closed in on 350 in the first innings. de Villiers has been in spectacular form in the 2013-14 season, amassing 12 consecutive fifties in his last 12 Tests. Of those, five have now been converted into 100s. In fact, he is also the third highest run getter in Tests worldwide in the 2013-14 season, only behind Misbah-ul-Haq and Brendon McCullum.
When de Villiers came in to bat late on Day One of the ongoing Test match, South Africa had already lost three wickets for 140-odd on board. But he then took control of their innings, and along with JP Duminy on Day Two morning, have pushed the team total past 300. It is his fifth century against Australia.
