Opting to bat first, West Indies managed just 204 runs against Afghanistan in the final of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2018 at Harare. It was collective bowling on part of the Afghanistan side that downed West Indies’ strong batting unit. Only Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer provided a fight to their opposition.

West Indies openers Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis started steady, but could not march on. Gayle made 10 runs before becoming Mujeeb Zadran’s first victim. Sharafuddin Ashraf taking a spectacular catch in covers to dismiss Gayle off Gulbadin Naib. Lewis failed to pick a slower-ball by Naib and handed a simple catch to Mohammad Shahzad behind the wicket.

Marlon Samuels along with Shai Hope helped the side cross the 50-run mark. Samules, much his others, made 17 and fell to Naib. Samules pulled a short delivery straight into hands of Rahmat Shah. Rashid Khan came on and reaped instant results. He trapped Hope in front for 23. Hope was Rashid’s 100th ODI wicket; fastest ever. Jason Holder came in the middle and last minutes before being run out for a diamond duck.

Hetmyer and Powell joined forces and provided some normalcy to the West Indies’ innings. The pair added 37 crucial runs, before Ashraf claimed Hetmyer’s wicket. This was Ashraf’s first ODI wicket. He made 38 off 51 balls.

Carlos Brathwaite joined Powell with West Indies six down for 138.

Powell showed some resistance against Rashid and co. ticking off runs on the scoreboard. Brathwaite, on the other hand used his aggressive nature to do the talking. Brathwaite’s innings was brought to an end by Dawlat Zadran. In all fairness it was a nothing shot by Brathwaite, he made 14.

Ashley Nurse came out to join Powell, who was holding one end up. Slowly and steadily they took West Indies near 200-run mark . The pair added up making 41 runs for the eighth wicket, before Powell fell. He was bowled by Mujeeb for 44. He went to pick up Keemo Paul and Kemar Roach  wickets as well, to all out West Indies on 204.

Nurse remained unbeaten on 26 off 29.
