India’s newly appointed Head Coach Anil Kumble can continue his role of chairman of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Cricket Committee, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official reportedly said. There was news circling around that former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly could take over Kumble’s post as chairman of ICC’s Cricket Committee. However, like Darren Lehmann and Rahul Dravid, Kumble can also continue his role with the ICC despite of being given the responsibility of India’s head coach. Kumble is yet to make a statement on this if he is keen on handling two crucial roles simultaneously. Kumble will serve as India’s head coach for a span of one year. According to CricBuzz, the BCCI official added, “My understanding is that he can continue to be at this post. There have been few other former cricketers who are now performing the coach duty and still the members of the ICC committee. Darren Lehmann is Australia’s coach and Rahul Dravid is attached with the junior teams in India and are the active members of the ICC’s high profile committee. Why should Anil Kumble leave this post?”
Kumble’s appointment also marks the end of the Indian infatuation towards overseas coaches, as it is the first time since the appointment of John Wright in 2000 that India have appointed a home coach. Before Wright, Angshuman Gaekwad was India’s coach. Following the exit of Wright, India witnessed an infamous tenure of Greg Chappell, followed by South Africa’s Gary Kirsten and then Fletcher.
