England openers Michael Carberry and Alastair Cook steadied the England innings after seeing of the new ball against the Australian pacers. Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Ryan Harris tested the openers consistently but managed to escape unharmed.
Carberry has looked more relaxed among the two openers. Cook was circumspect at the start checking his strokes. Carberry in the meanwhile has been confident going for his strokes. He survived twice after Brad Haddin failed to reach to a miscued shot by Carberry and an edge falling short of slips. After the initial pressure, both openers opened up with Cook playing two well-timed cover drives and Carberry coming down the track lofting Nathan Lyon for a six.
Australia have scored 385 runs in their first innings.
